Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted April 3 Super User Posted April 3 Should be a really good derby to follow, and Guntersville is extremely healthy right now. Should be lots of diverse tactics used as well, fish are in all stages. My buddy Jacob Walker is currently in second. 2 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted April 4 Author Super User Posted April 4 Would have thought this derby would generate more discussion and interest. First day was fantastic, so many different things in play.......sight fishing, power fishing up shallow, shaking a minnow and neko with the scope. Some of the leaders didn't even turn scope on for their allotted period, than savant scopers like Drew Gill are getting hammered by the field. My friend Jacob had the lead for quite awhile but ended the day in second. He's an amazing story as he still works full time. I have no idea how you can be as good as he is without doing it full time. He almost qualified for the BPT last year but still managed to win the Invitational at Champlain which allowed him to fish Redcrest. If you watched the Classic, you should really watch this event. Imho, the coverage, the fishing, and especially the format is 1000x better than BASS. It's amazing how fewer commercials they have on MLF, and it's equally amazing how much they focus on showing actual fishing and making the anglers who are on camera educate the audience. 4 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted April 4 Super User Posted April 4 Was only able to catch a few glimpses of it today. Looked to be fairly calm out there. Hopefully I have more time to watch tomorrow. 1 Quote

Smirak Posted April 4 Posted April 4 I wouldn’t have said it was calm. I wasn’t at Guntersville, but about 20 miles down river. The wind was wicked blustery about noon-ish… 😳 The redcrest expo is in town this weekend as well. Pretty excited to go check that out tomorrow…actually may go fish Guntersville tomorrow now that yall have me thinking about it. Pulled my kayak PB out of there Monday. 1 Quote

I was actually able to get out and fish for a good 10 hours the other day. Was a little beat the next day. But I'll be fishing til the wheels fall off. 6 Quote
Dan N Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Looks like a lot of lead changes going on, I’ve just been checking in from work 1 Quote
Smirak Posted April 4 Posted April 4 Dude - @AlabamaSpothunter I’ve watched Jacob catch about 12lbs in the last 10 mins… I kept thinking he looked familiar and then realized it’s Jacob from Mark’s Tackle 😂😂 1 Quote
IYAOYAS Posted Friday at 06:46 PM Posted Friday at 06:46 PM Call me crazy but since MLF made the FFS decision for this year to only use it during one period MLF is way more interesting to watch than Bassmaster. Even adds an extra amount of drama with the one period deal. Bassmaster needs to change alot of things before they become the bottom of the barrel for professional fishing. 3 Quote

My mom used to take me up there and I'd buy tackle with my allowance. He's helped me a ton, and how many tackle stores can you go to where the employees are top level pro anglers. 6 hours ago, IYAOYAS said: Call me crazy but since MLF made the FFS decision for this year to only use it during one period MLF is way more interesting to watch than Bassmaster. Absolutely, watching MLF coverage is like night and day vs. the current BASS product. Honestly between the commercials, and unreal amount of talking heads on BASS Live, I just can't get into it anymore. That and the unfettered FFS usage has really turned me off to their product. Just last year I was still firmly on the BASS train wagon and have always been a BASS man my whole life. This was MLF's initial business plan after all, in the beginning they set their goal to be the best at live coverage, and it seems like it's finally paying off for them. They do need to pick one format and keep it though. 3 Quote
Smirak Posted Saturday at 01:43 AM Posted Saturday at 01:43 AM @AlabamaSpothunter I’ve been a few times. If I’m on a tackle hunt/spending spree, I’ll leave Huntsville, stop at Vans, Dicks and Academy all in Cullman. Hit up Marks and the big bass pro there in Leeds. Then I’ll head back. Mostly however, my money goes to TW, BPS and Waterfront Tackle at Guntersville…sometimes I’ll drive to Chattanooga and shop at Hog Farmer. Others, if you don’t know Mark’s tackle, it’s a blast. Huge store/selection. For a small glimpse, look it up on YouTube. RetroBassin recently did a video of the shop and actually Jacob was the star! 1 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted Saturday at 01:53 AM Author Super User Posted Saturday at 01:53 AM @Smirak Really appreciate the head's up on the retro tackle video, going to find it and watch now. One of the coolest things about Mark's is how often you'll be browsing the isles and bump into a top level pro doing the same thing....just buying tackle. Lot of inside baseball talk as well, lot of the pro guys just shoot the bull hanging around the counter. I've heard GTO in your neck of the woods is the tackle store of the pros and folks in the know....Guntersville Tackle Outdoor @ Waterfront - Guntersville Tackle Outdoor @ Waterfront Quote
Smirak Posted Saturday at 02:33 AM Posted Saturday at 02:33 AM Yeah, waterfront/GTO is the bomb place to be. I was in there on Monday and saw quite a few folks that I figured were already there for practice. Much restocking going on. Employee told me to fish this spot and I wound up with my kayak PB. I listen to them frequently… Funny about the inside baseball talk because aside from fishing, I’m a baseball umpire! 2 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted Saturday at 02:57 PM Author Super User Posted Saturday at 02:57 PM One of the rare tournaments where you can watch FFS actually hurting anglers. I think this event will be won by a guy who never turned on his FFS. The guys who committed to old school fishing from takeoff, are the guys who seem best positioned to win it. They aren't wasting a whole period out in the abyss looking for dots. 2 Quote
