What do you recommend?  I plan to throw 110s, cranks down to 10', and lighter topwater like walking baits and poppers.  On my short list is a GLX 822CBR.  Any other suggestions are recommended.

Man, A 2 power loomis crankbait  rod is pretty soft. I have the 3 power in the IMX pro and I wouldn't fish a deep little N on it which is what I think of in a 10ft crankbait. And defiantly not a spook.

A Dobyns 705 cb may be the ticket.

Dobyns Kaden 610 4CB is a really nice 110 and 110jr rod, these were on sale at a few places recently as low as $100-130. I plan on picking one up the next one. Or the Champion 704CB/705CB which is Garys favorite (cant remember the exact one though)

For an unlimited budget the Expride takes the win over all else though.

Megabass P5 Z-Crank Elseil.  Great rod. It will handle small cranks, topwater poppers, and 110s but it excels to me with the 110jr and 110jr +1. The tip snaps back perfectly for jerkbaits and poppers. It will also launch a 110jr further than any rod I have used. This rod and Kasumi Six Eleven are my favorites out of the P5 lineup.

I'm starting to like a V-110 on a stiff spinning rod, like a Powell Naked rod.  casts great, and taps them in great.

my mid cranks...my new Oricchi Bandersnatch is killing it.  very fun rod to use.

I dont see mid cranks and the vision 11o on the same rod.

Less the cranks but for top waters and jerk baits it’s the falcon finesse jig for me. It also throws the smaller cranks fine but I have other rods for that.

I would have said the same thing a year ago but the P5 Z Crank was eye opening. In fact, I probably would have suggested three different rods to the original poster's question.

I did buy it from a JDM site but I made a phone call to a popular online company and asked what casting rod for a 110jr. I was surprised when when they suggested the Z Crank.  When I found it for less than $300 shipped,  the Bait Monkey got me.

I don't think its going to be the best for a big deep diving cranks or a big walking topwater bait but for something like an OSP Blitz MR or even a Rock Crawler, its great. If I had the skill,  I'd shot a video showing all three baits. Its just one of those special rods.

I am ready to pepper spray the monkey of bait-spluging.  thanks @FishTank

I know what you mean. I have two boxes waiting at home.

Another odd thing this rod is good at, flat sided crankbaits like the Flat Force below that weighs 3/7oz.  I always have a hard time casting some of them but it loads them pretty well.

The 2 rods I have that can do all you're asking are MC Days 360 610M/RF and the Expride 6'10M/MF.  We're close to each other if you wanna try either before you decide.

Since want hybrid type rod

Powell 725 graphite CBR

if not top water then

Powell 724 or 725  in composite cbr

doing my best to think of my rods that could do more than one technique

its hard because i use specific rods for specific techniques.

Megabass Levante flatside comes to mind.

I did not like the Expride 6’10” Medium at all - the 15 inch handle is way too long and a PIA to fish jerkbaits or poppers for any period of time.

A 13 inch handle is about perfect IMO. I have both a Dobyns Champ 685cb and 705cb and they work really well for jerkbaits, cranks, topwater/poppers, square bills, flat sides. Pick your preferred length between those two models, but the handle/action is just right on these rods.

A friend of mine just switched from the Expride over to the Dobyns as well.

I find it amazing how much variance there is in all of this.  I'm the complete opposite, I've had a 705cb and a 706cb and can't stand that bend for jerkbaits.  I feel like I get so many less bites when the rod loads/unloads so slowly on a cb blank, the jerk bait just doesn't dance the same compared to a crisper blank.  This is most obvious to me in cold water, which is also when I throw jerkbaits most frequently.  I definitely agree with you that those actions on the dobyns cb rods are great for other treble hooked lures.  The 15" expride handle isn't ideal for me with rain gear on, otherwise I don't notice with the way I palm the reel.

I agree. I used a 705cb for jerkbaits once and wasn’t a fan. Like it for crankbaits though

I use a 6'9" M/MF Kistler KLX for jerkbaits.  I also have a 6'10" M/MF Shimano Expride A that's touted as the perfect jerkbait rod by a popular YT'er.  The Kistler and Shimano have nearly identical actions.  I prefer the Kistler because I like the cork grips much better and the Expride doesn't have a hook holder.  I paid almost $100 less for the Kistler than the Expride.

I use a few different rods for mid cranks.

  • Kistler KLX: 6'9" M/MF, 7'3" MH/MF.
  • Kistler Feel 'N Reel: 7'3" M/M
  • Diawa Tatula 7' ML/R

The Feel 'N Reel is my favorite.  It's got a strange tip, not MF or F, but almost like an Ugly Stick.  It's very sensitive and has a lot of backbone for a M rated rod.

I use my 6'9" KLX, 7' Tatula, a 7' KLX spinning rod, and 6' 10" ML/M G Loomis GL2  for topwaters.

I prefer Kistler rods over most others I own.  They're priced right if you sign up for Kistler's emails and/or catch them on sale.  Most importantly, they're made in the USA.  Kistler's customer service is also top notch.
