Super User FishTank Posted February 16, 2007 Super User Posted February 16, 2007 Just curious, has anyone tried thin braid before, like 6lb PowerPro or Sufix? The super thin size of these lines has caught my attention and I was wanting to know what everyone thought of it and what situation it is best suited for. Thanks for any info Quote
heathen Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 I have tried about every small diameter braid out there and IMO 20/6 is about as low as I like. Anything lower and it tends to slip through the tiny opening in the eye of the hook, catches on split rings and frays real quick. Quote
Garnet Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 The knot slipping is a hook problem. Send your hooks back to your manufacture and complain. Power Pro has new this year 5lb that they say is 1 lb dia. there 8 lb. is also a 1 lb. dia. but the 5 lb is 30% thinner it is wicked thin. I've been at the fishing show and the Red Prower Pro is flying off the shelves. Garnet Quote
Super User Alpster Posted February 16, 2007 Super User Posted February 16, 2007 I use 20lb PP (6lb dia.) on my 1000 series spinning reel and I can't imagine the advantage in a thinner line. JMHO Ronnie Quote
chitwnbass Posted February 17, 2007 Posted February 17, 2007 8lb power pro is extremley good at cutting through your hand. ;D Iknow from experince other than that its fine to use I have it on a few spinning setups and never had a problem with it. The 5lb is like silk though, Its less than .005" thick. Thats crazy. Quote
sal669 Posted February 18, 2007 Posted February 18, 2007 I use 8lb and 15lb PP braid a lot, but only on spinning reels. Not so much for bass fishing as for walley(jigging and trolling) and steelhead (drifting). Most of the times I have a 3-6ft leader(fluoro or mono). It's wicked how much sensitivity you gain compared to mono on long casts or deep water. I used thin braid for bass fishing in weedy lakes with a short leader (1-3ft). It's ammaising(?) how easily it cuts the weeds(I'm not talking thick mats, but reasonable vegetation), and instead of ending up with 20lb of weeds and a small bass,You will have to reel in a much smaller package. Now, bass where I fish (smaller lakes in Michigan) dont grow that big ! DO NOT TOUCH THE BRAID WHEN THE ROD IS LOADED!!! (hung up, fish on etc.).It will cut your finger !!! Instead grab the spool. I cut my finger while setting the hook and didn't let go of the line. It's not pleasant and can ruin a day of fishing. Try it out, you might like it. Quote
