fishingJ Posted February 11, 2007 Posted February 11, 2007 Is Power line a good versatile line for all lure setups on a spinning reel. Why or why not? If it isn't then what is a good versatile line for all lure setups on a spinning reel, around 10-12 pound test. Quote
Crabcakes Posted February 12, 2007 Posted February 12, 2007 No it is probably not the best choice for all lure types. Braid is inherently ill suited to treble hook lures because it has no stretch. I would use either a softer copolymer like hybrid ultra soft or a good quality mono with low stretch for a setup designed for versatility. These would probably give you a better balance of stretch and sensitivity than braid would if you intend to fish all types of lures while at the same time having low enough memory to be used on spinning gear. Your question itself raises some problems as a spinning reel with 10-12lb test is not suited for all lure types. You can do alot with such a set up but it is not suited for fishing in heavy cover or in situations that call for light line. The fact that braid is more suited to heavy cover fishing (its very visible) is another reason I would not recommend it for spin fishing. You'll hear many different answers none of which are "right" or "wrong" but thats what I'd do. Quote
Super User T-rig Posted February 12, 2007 Super User Posted February 12, 2007 I use 10-20lb. power pro (or tuff line) for all my plastics on spinning reels. When the water is really clear i use a fluorocarbon leader. Quote
sal669 Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 Agree with T-rig...braided lines are not suited for faster mooving baits like crankbaits or spinerbaits (in my opinion) because braids have no strech and you pull the lure out of their mouth, when they try to inhale the lure. Braids are good anytime high sensitivity is needed or you need to cut through weeds Quote
Hot n Tot Posted February 13, 2007 Posted February 13, 2007 I tried power pro on a couple of spinning rigs and was disappointed. It didn't seem to cast very well, and just didn't feel right when retrieving line. But I really like it on casting reels for some applications. Quote
SneakySnook Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I use 10-20lb power pro for all my spinning reels and have never had any problems. Down here in Florida for saltwater all they use is braid on spinning reels. Just use a leader if the water is clear. Quote
Triton21 Posted February 14, 2007 Posted February 14, 2007 I pulled the trigger on some Power Pro today. Hope I like it. Kelley Quote
bassfisher70 Posted February 15, 2007 Posted February 15, 2007 Got me some power pro and p-line from walmart, when did they start carrying these lines? I'm glad they are though. I hope I like this power pro first time user.. :-? Quote
Super User Alpster Posted February 15, 2007 Super User Posted February 15, 2007 I just bought 1500 yards of 50lb Power Pro on e-bay. I will re-spool 1/2 dozen reels with it. I use braid for everything except crank baits and ultra light fishing. I like it. Ronnie Quote
heathen Posted February 16, 2007 Posted February 16, 2007 I use 20/6 on all spinning gear and 30/8 on all casting gear. Quote
Super User RoLo Posted February 16, 2007 Super User Posted February 16, 2007 I use spinning tackle exclusively (save my ultra-light gear) and every reel is spooled with 20 or 30-lb PowerPro Spectra Braid. It casts stupendously well, it's non-stretch, it has zero memory, it's non-twist, it's exceedingly strong, it lasts indefinitely ~ ~ ~ ~ In all sincerity, PowerPro braid is the greatest angling upgrade I made in about 25 years. I don't miss mono one iota Roger Quote
