The difference between the two is pretty astonishing.  The giveaway is usually the length of the legs.  Wolves stand much higher than a yote does.  Minnesota has the highest gray wolf population in the lower 48.

 

If ever in doubt, it's a coyote until proven otherwise.


The rule of thumb is that if you have to ask if it is a wolf then it was coyote. Wolves are huge.

this one time, i went to lake whitney and took my civic down this trail with my friend. we opened the door and saw an unbelievable amount of deer bones, and a fresh deer leg just outside my door. I didn't see the actual predator, but I believe that was a mountain lion den
