Swest18x Posted February 24 Posted February 24 Looking for advice for a budget rod (or two) for the following baits. Big swimbaits are not my game but a couple years ago I got laid up with knee surgery and made the mistake of binging on Tactical Bassin videos. Next thing you know I got a couple hundred bucks in baits but never followed through with gear to fish them. I'm mostly interested in quality budget rods, probably one for hard baits one for jig hooks unless looking at my tackle list you have ideas for a single rod that could do both. I was toying with the idea of an IMX 965 but that's more money than I can justify because I won't be throwing them that much. But I do want to dabble. I fish a lot of clear water, distance is a big deal to me so I'm definitely looking for longer rods to bomb. Baits I own and want to get wet this year: Treble baits: S Waver 168, 6" Triple Trout, Vatalion. Also want to throw a 6" magdraft, possibly even an 8 on this rod. Soft Baits: 5" Bacca Burrito, maybe a 6? I have a couple 6" Huddlestons too but don't know if I'll throw it that much. More interested in a rod for the Burrito, Magdrafts, and medium size glide baits. Trying to do my own homework Dobyns Fury 795SB sounds like a good beginner rod, is it moderate enough to keep the above treble baits pinned or is it overkill? Thanks Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 24 Super User Posted February 24 Irod IRD 783SB is a good choice for all the lures you referenced; $150 Tom 1 Quote
Swest18x Posted February 24 Author Posted February 24 I am a braid to leader guy...may have to change that? But if I run say 50 braid to 17 leader micro guides might be a problem? Quote
softwateronly Posted February 24 Posted February 24 I never found an entry level rod that I liked for all those baits. I do have a Fury795sb and have had my most success with treble hooked glides and have not been happy with single jighook baits. I think you'd feel the same as well. Lots of others have said similar things about the irod series as @WRB so that would be a great choice. I have a non-US MC Days 702X rod that will do everything you're asking for at a high level, but it doesn't have the length. US MC looks like they made the Benkei series in more american friendly lengths and could be worth checking out; Birc 78XH/BB 3/8-3oz, but I haven't heard anything about the reloaded series yet. scott 1 Quote
5by3 Posted February 25 Posted February 25 The tactical bassin crew throws most of those baits on the Expride 7’7 heavy with the exception of maybe the Huddleston jig hook baits (you’d need a heavier rod for those). If wanting more of a budget friendly rod, you could check the curado line. I’ve found that Shimano usually has the same or similar models across their different tiers of rods. Quote
Super User webertime Posted February 25 Super User Posted February 25 Tatula 7ft 9in swimbait rods are being cleared out and will do most of what you are asking for (1.5-4oz comfortably). I love mine. Truth be told the single/jig hook baits up to 2oz can be tossed on a ton of "normal" Heavy power fast rods. Treble baits in the same range would work on the Dobyns 795. Sierra Trading Post has the Douglas LRS swimbait rod (1-4 ounces) for $75-99 (changes often). It's doesn't list lure weights but the 7ft6in 20-30lb rod is it. I played with them at a fishing expo and they are very similar in action to the Tatula. Ignore the "extra fast" action as it's not at all. Quote
Swest18x Posted February 25 Author Posted February 25 That Tatula 7'9 is listed as a regular action. Could I get away fishing a 5" Burrito on it? Expride 7'7 rates 1.5 oz max? I really like the look of the Izod but I think the micro guides are a deal breaker for me. It's starting to feel like I need to break this down into two rods, one for soft Baits (5" -6" Burrito, 6 - 8" Magdraft, smaller sizes most of the time), one for small to medium hardbaits. Quote

It's actually quite moderate IMHO. I have one and knew this going in. You're going to have to lean on it a bit with single hook swimbaits. JMHO. Thinking a rod would have enough give to keep treble hooks from pulling out, while at the same time, thinking that it could have the backbone to drive a big single hook past the barb and keep those fishing coming to the boat? I'm not sure you can expect to have it both ways. Quote

The 79 Zodias is a great jid hook rod too. Quote
