WhatJustHappened Posted February 22 Posted February 22 I take a canoe with my BIL, I like to fish for 4-6 hrs, but as I'm 60 now, My butt hurts(not webbing, hard plastic seats) and would prefer more comfort. I've read reviews of everything pretty much, but straps will probably be restrictive. Anyone have proven comfort WITHOUT restrictions? Thanks Quote
padlin Posted February 22 Posted February 22 For just the butt I tried different thicknesses of the foam hunting style seat cushions, while they work some I still got uncomfortable after 4 or so hours, plus they slide around. The best I found is the ROYAL seat Cushion from Purple. It’s plenty thick and stays in place fairly well, needs a few minor moves while in use. I went with the royal as the top edges are rounded. I also built a removable back to my seat that bolts to the existing seat similar to this, except the back pulls out. Which means the mod is pretty much permanent and not the easiest thing to build. I had tried one of the ones that straps around the bottom of the seat but didn’t care for it at all. If I remember correctly, it didn’t give much support. The one in the photo may work, it’s from Old Town. Mine works best if I wear or put my foam PFD over it as a cushion. Purple now makes a back cushion that straps around the back, that would probably work. A seat doesn’t help when you need to stand to stretch out the back and legs, got to get out of the canoe for that. A gas backpacking stove for a coffee break on the tailgate of the truck works for that. Now that you’ve graduated to senior status you’ll need bathroom breaks anyway. 1 Quote
padlin Posted February 22 Posted February 22 Something I didn’t mention, added height from the cushion takes away a little stability. 1 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 22 Super User Posted February 22 I just went whole-hog with my canoe. Replaced the plastic seat with a length of 2x12, then mounted a standard boat seat to that. Without the outriggers, it was a little wobbly, but with them there was no issues. 1 Quote
WhatJustHappened Posted February 23 Author Posted February 23 Yeah, looks good, but it's my BIL Canoe, so nothing permanent. I think this will be a cushion thing...he already has some "Chairs", but they have straps, so I don't really like them much(pretty sure we tried them once...just like the trolling motor..nah). I think a reasonably fat cushion that straps to the fiberglass seat will be 100% better. Nothing good for a 6hr canoe at my age. O well, figured I'd ask the most experienced. Thanks Quote

Yeah, don't think he'll do that. Thanks! Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 23 Super User Posted February 23 This is what I use: https://portagenorth.com/canoe-seat-cushion/?attribute_pa_color=black&srsltid=AfmBOorJDcEYyMaUjac12gVOYmDZxDreh9vwm5YCaoDtD0zB5HcZ-hX9sDM&gQT=1 I'm nearly 69, usually fish for five-hour stretches, and it's comfy. Something else to try is to drop to your knees now and then. When I paddled whitewater, I did so on my knees and you can fish from your knees too. A few minutes on your knees eases a few hours on your bum. Quote
