I have a vintage (1958-1959) Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 5000 and will be replacing the bushings with bearings soon, when they arrive. My question is, the bushings have a little tag that fits into a slot. I suppose this tag keeps the bushing stationary, from spinning. The bearing will not have that tag. Will the bearing remain stationary or will the outside of the bearing spin? Or, should I even be concerned? Thanks

I don't know of any conversion for older 5000A/B to berings, other than swapping to 5000C sideplates.

They do sell bushings to replace the bearings on 5000C

adding a ps - I checked Mike's Reel Repair in BC - seems like if anybody made this upgrade, it would be them - they don't make anything like it.

But it's interesting, they followed my lead and are offering full-silicon-nitride ceramic for -C series reels

A regular 3x10x4 bearing won’t fit in those as bulldog points out. Good results can be had super tuning those reels including inside bushing surfaces and level wind parts.

Thanks for your input and suggestions. Boca Bearing is supposed to make bearings that fit the 3.2x10x4mm bushings that I want to replace, but those are costly, and I went with a less expensive alternative. Using a micrometer the spool shaft and ID of bushings measure 3.2 mm. If this conversion works, I will post results.

Well, the two of you were correct, the bearings that I bought did not work. Although I measured with a micrometer, and ordered bearings that were extremely close to my measurements, they did not fit properly. I ordered from China and they took a few weeks to get here, so I was only out a total of less than $10.00. Lesson learned, listen to other fishermen. Thanks.
