twofishy4u Posted February 9 Posted February 9 2 spinning and 2 baitcasting rods. What are you building and why? Quote
Logan S Posted February 12 Posted February 12 1: NFC Delta CB705 Hybrid - Any crankbait from a small flatside to a DT14/16, lipless, topwater (with a reel/line change) 2: PB731HXF - Any bottom contact, light flipping, 'standard' swimbaits like a 6" Magdraft, frog (with a reel/line change) 3 & 4: PB701LXF X2 - Anything you need to do with a spinning rod, jerkbaits (since I'm not dedicating a casting rod to it) I could get by with that pretty nicely, but that's no fun...I'd much rather have 24 than 4 . If someone were a co-angler, that would be a pretty awesome fleet of rods...Simple, versatile, and effective. 2 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted February 12 Posted February 12 Two spinning rods...one medium, and one medium light. Two casting rods...one medium, and one medium heavy. Most of my rods fit in to these four categories. I do have a few light spinning rods, and a few heavy and extra heavy casting rods (for pike). 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted February 12 Super User Posted February 12 2 spinning 2 casting seems like a sensible plan. 6'6 - 6'8 rods for both. Spinning ML - Med Casting med - MH I'd be fine with all Dobyns. Quote
Lead Head Posted February 13 Posted February 13 Because of where and how I fish, I didn't use spinning rods much. After getting a couple BFS spools, I don't use them at all. I'll give a generalized answer based on my personal opinion. Anything bottom contact- Point Blank (NFC X-ray is my second choice) Moving baits- NFC Delta (American Tackle Bushido is my second choice) @Logan S gave the correct answer 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 13 Global Moderator Posted February 13 4 casting, No spinning 1/ 7’2-7’4” H/XF 1/ 7’2”-7’4” H/F 2/ 7’0”-7’3” MH/F Mike 1 Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted February 13 Super User Posted February 13 I do spinning, I also love cranking, so here's my setup. 1 7'0"-7'4" Med/Fast spinning, 2500 reel - finesse, shaky, wacky, underspins, soft swimbaits 1 7'2"-7'4" Heavy/Fast casting, 7.1:1-7.5:1 reel - frogs, football jigs, pitching 1 7'0"-7'4" Med-Heavy/Moderate casting, 6.0:1-6.5:1 reel - cranks, cranks, and more cranks. 1 7'1"-7'4" Med-Heavy/Fast casting, 7.1:1-7.5:1 reel - everything else Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted February 14 Posted February 14 Most of my build selection is now blanks that are no longer made in rod or blank. My dropshot rod would be a SCV 5S76MLXF, it has a lighter, more sensitive tip than most DS do and at the same time more butt than blanks I have tried in similar line/lure ratings. If you had St. Croix SCV blanks in 5C70MF it is rated with a lure spread narrower than I would, I see no reason why 1/4 to 3/4 isn't within its realm and it will work with just about any lure within those specs, my selection for the rod I'd own if I could only have one, it's that good. The Rainshadow XBB 944 back bouncing blank would be one, you could jig fish a huge amount of species with it salt and fresh, higher modulus so its sensitivity is not an issue, throw swimbaits, CR, etc. again versatile, I also like the XBB 942, but it isn't really that different and it's long gone from the catalog. Lastly, the NFC 700 X Ray, trout, panfish, BFS, small stream bass, you name the light/smaller stuff it will make you smile be it presentation or prey size. Love the lightest Immortal popping rod blank for this also if you need a bit more butt to horse fish with, closer to NFC SJ703 power but being also a fly fisher, I really see no need to go that way, though I own both. You always think you need more if you haven't used less. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 15 Super User Posted February 15 Baitcaster, mh/f, 6'-6" to 7-4", Jigs. Baitcaster, mh/f, 6'-6" to 7-4", Plastics. Baitcaster, m/f, 6'-6" to 7-4", Moving Baits. Spinning, m/f, 6'-6" to 7'-4", Finesse plastics. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted Sunday at 10:53 PM Posted Sunday at 10:53 PM It really depends on where and how you prefer to fish. Road warriors 3 rod starter suggestion of MF spin, MHF cast and MHMod cast then either a Hvy fast or ML XF on either end is one way to go. 1 Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted Sunday at 11:25 PM Super User Posted Sunday at 11:25 PM My two spinning rods would be a ML/F for finesse and M/M or MF for crankbaits. My casting rods would be a M/F and MH/F for most everything else. I’m partial to Kistler rods. Quote

Both are stellar rods, new blanks are S Korean made and I’m sure you’re aware, they are exceptional, what makes it even more special is the affordability vs my GLX rods. I also use Edge/NFC as well. (2 spinning) very good rods as well but Treys CS is exceptional vs Edge imo. Quote

Trey answered the phone and took a couple extra minutes to discuss the build. Made a customer for life. Quote
