Got this one a year ago. Its my football jig/Swimbait reel and I love it. So smooth.

If you ever watched the Project T video when the reel 1st came out you would see a lot of lob casting and pitching hinting at the precision, effortless casting and control of the reel.  Only Jun Maeda shows off what I consider a normal distance cast.  Everyone else is doing close in work or lobbing baits.

I’ve never seen this. I bought my two after @bulldog1935 talked highly of it. However, after my own field testing the pitching and midrange casting of this reel with the accuracy is truly phenomenal at least imo.. gonna watch this video now. Thanks for the link, much appreciated.

What gear ratio? I opted for the 7 speed on both reels. I still gotta try these on my LC squarebill cranks, I prefer to fish crank baits faster than most when possible. Have you pulled any crank baits in with it?

It's an 8.1 and I have not used it for cranks. I run those on the slower side(6.3)

Well I bought another Zillion…it’s y’all’s fault 😂😂came today. Found a 1016 old stock-new under $200. I love the body on this reel. This is the reel Jun said was Daiwa’s best baitcaster ever (to date in 2016) winds blowing 20 to 60 today so got to  wait. It’s going on a Zillion rod. 7’3” MH RB. I’ve had the rod for about 4 years but haven’t given it a fair shake. Everything else I own is Loomis or NFC-Kistler-Edge. IMG_2035.jpeg.829e786cb0c1f1c50179ef5bbbbf9d59.jpeg

@Lead Head - no, 34-mm - 1516 is a 36-mm spool

I've made a point to buy only 34-mm floating-spool Daiwa - Steez, Zillion, Ryoga 1016.

(the Yahoo Ryoga came with shallower, 1012 MagZ spool)

Doesn't the 1016 use a 36mm spool?

I knew some of the earlier Zillion reels (after t-wing was introduced) still had 36mm but couldn't remember when they switched.

That would be the Zillion TWS and old/USDM Zillion HD.

Hey @bulldog1935... Didn't the old TD Fuegos, TDZ 100ML US Trail and Zillions have a 36mm spool?, slightly different than the TDZ and TDX 103 and 105 reels that had the 34mm?

Do you know if the 1516 spool you mentioned being a 36mm spool would fit them? Just wondering if it would be an option for the old TD Fuegos and 100H US Trail Team Daiwa reels I have.

No, those are a narrow 36mm unlike the wide 36mm found on the Zillion TWS, USDM Zillion HD, Catalina TW and Ryoga 1516.  The only modern reels to get the narrow 36mm spool is the Steez HLC.  The new Tatula 150 will probably also use a narrow 36mm spool but will have a long spool shaft.

There are aftermarket spools from Amo and Ray's Studio that fit the narrow spool 36mm reels.  There are also used spools from the reels sold individually but the gigas in the US Trail is one of the more sought after spools and you already have that.

@FrnkNsteen - can't answer that, bro - I'm actually new to Daiwa - 2016 Steez was my first Daiwa since 1978.

Looking back, 200 frame numbers had 36-mm spool, and 100 numbers had 34-.

I'd also use Jun Sonada's database on JapanTackle to search anything OG Daiwa.

Jun has perfect English,  is always eager to help, and knows more about baitcasters than anyone else I could mention.

 https://japantackle.com/tuning-parts/spools-casting-reels/daiwa.html

Send him your question.

When I asked him about SV Boost spool on TDZ, he provided me a detailed answer about why the brake would come up short on that match.

Thanks @Bigbox99. I've been happy with the spools I have in the ML100 and TD Fuegos, but the thought of having other options was interesting. Nice to know there are options and what to watch for.

AFIK, all AMO spools have fixed rotor, which I think would come up short on TDZ magnets, for everything except finesse baits.

Ray's SV is a better all-range spool than Daiwa SV, IMO, and I have 2 of these, on '19 Zillion SVTW and '22 SLPW-Z.

The guys on Taclke Tour go so far as to replace Daiwa SV inductor with Ray's because the tapered magnet-end of the inductor acts like Boost to add cast distance.

Also note, I haven't tested this spool on CV-Z magnets.
