Skunked!

I finally went fishing, returning to the pond where I own property. I liked the drive because there was no traffic. I don't know why that was so, but I enjoyed having the road to myself:

 

 

I arrived at the driveway to the pond. I was so excited to see the water. I couldn't quite see it yet, but soon.

 

 

A walk through the woods took me to the wetlands between the water and me. Open water! At last!!!

 

 

I walked the boardwalk to my canoe. She was ready and I was too:

 

 

I dragged her out to open water and trolled a deep diving crankbait, thinking the bass might be deep since I was fishing a wee early. However, the crankbait malfunctioned and would not dive. It worked like a surface lure and a mighty lousy surface lure. Not surprisingly, I was skunked. Rapala will be getting a strongly worded letter from me!

This thread reveals how MUCH I MISS FISHING. I really did drive down to the pond yesterday...in the snow. I miss it that much. In the bottom pic, where the marsh ends and there's nothing but white beyond the plants, that's the pond. You can see it in the second pic too. Meanwhile, I just snowblew the backyard for the second time in two days so that my pup can do his business. I don't clear it entirely. I just clear paths for him. I make a maze that he loves to explore!

The only open water I know of is the at the end of my street … the Atlantic ocean.

Thousands upon thousands of anglers here relish the opportunity to fish those conditions every winter here during a seasonal activity known only as “ice fishing.”

 

It has more participants than the entire open water season does, an it’s only a few months long at the most.

 

I do not participate.

I tried it once. I was soooooo cold and found no joy staring at a hole in the ice.

Isn’t for this guy either.

 

The cold doesn’t really bother me. It’s the concept of just sitting there, mostly waiting that I don’t care for. Fish are cold blooded too so their activity level is much lower under an ice cube.

Amazing......that more people enjoy the winter ice fishing than the rest of the year. I don't get it but there must be something really special about it. I'm sure not knocking it. I've just got to be moving.

You must realize that the cost associated with ice fishing is pretty minimal when you compare it to owning a boat.

 

A guy can get into ice fishing with a portable shack and all the required gear for under 1000 bucks. Access to any lake, any portion of the lake, assuming safe ice.

 

By comparison, owning a boat can be far more expensive. Plus insurance, towing, storage, gasoline use, etc. You get the point.
