CoryRobertLowe Posted February 1 Posted February 1 I'm somewhat new to fishing with a boat. (I started last year.) Do we have a resource for the fundamentals of using a bass boat? A know it's a big subject, but this would be a helpful video series. Also, Does anyone have any "books" they recommend I read, on the subject? I wanted to post this, as I think this would be helpful to others too. I know this is a "big" question, and could be broken into smaller, more specific questions. The high-level view is helpful, for beginners, so they have a starting place to dig deeper. 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted February 1 Super User Posted February 1 Cory, scroll through the forum titles. They have a big section on boats, how to and all info regarding boats of all kinds. 2 Quote
Super User senile1 Posted February 1 Super User Posted February 1 Do an internet search for "basics of running a bassboat." The search will provide videos and reading material that should answer your questions. The Idiot's Guide to Boating and Sailing, or Powerboating For Dummies are good books for beginners, although if you have been running a boat for a year you may be looking for something more inline with the internet search I mentioned. 1 Quote
WaskaCrank12 Posted February 1 Posted February 1 There are some wonderful resources here on this site - as mentioned above if you search this site you will come across some great info. Like yourself I am relatively new to power boat fishing (I bought my first power boat, a used boat, in Feb. of 23'). I grew up near the ocean (and now live in the Alexandria, MN area) so I had experience being on boats/on the water and a very healthy dose of respect for the water (conditions can change rapidly and the water can get angry very fast). I had a decent amount of experience in sailing on the ocean, so I felt pretty good about how to navigate/be safe on the water - yet there are clear difference between sailing and using a power boat - and ocean navigation and lake water navigation. YouTube can also be a good resource for you (and others). Everything from how to prepare for your on the water experience (being properly prepared prior to getting on the water is a key element to a safe/positive experience), to safely backing down the boat ramp, to successfully navigating - can be found on YouTube. BoatUS has a good series of YouTube videos on safety - launching, navigating, loading your boat. Len's Cove Marina has a comprehensive catalogue of YouTube videos on all things boating. I am sure there are many more - search and find something that resonates with you. I encourage you to take someone with you on the boat as you learn and gain confidence (safety in numbers, someone to support you as you build confidence. someone to ask questions/encourage you) . As with learning how to drive a car for the first time - nothing beats actually getting out there and doing it - just make sure to always keep safety front and center. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 2 Super User Posted February 2 I've mentioned this before, when searching this site I use Google. Type in safe boating followed by bassresource.com. it will pull up far more information than the sites search engine. US Coast Guard & many states offer boating safety courses, some states it's a requirement 1 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 2 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 2 Well....when was that last time you used this site's search feature? It's been improved through the years. Plus, Google doesn't index every page of this site, but our site search does. 2 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted February 2 Super User Posted February 2 Something was vastly improved within the past few updates in the speed and relevance of the search here. It is really good. I don't usually have to get into the search options either. And it isn't limited to just the forums either. I hate doing searches on Google since keywords end up influencing the ads I see. Last week I typed in "I don't have a cat" and lo and behold, no more robot litter box ads! OP, get up to the videos and search in there. There is plenty to eat up a couple evenings watching bass boat basics vids. 2 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 2 Super User Posted February 2 @Glenn 👍 One suggestion I always make to anyone who is a first time boat operator. Take it out in weather that is less than ideal, anyone can run a boat in ideal conditions. PLEASE! do not try this without having someone on board with experience. 3 Quote
