The TDZs, the Curado Es, the Pixys, OG Steezs, etc. How many of you still use em? Personally, i use my custom pixy, og alphas, og steez 100SH and the Z2020 as much as the newer stuff, or maybe even more so. People say how with the progress that went into baitcasters, older reels can't really compete. I couldn't disagree more. If you want SV or SV Boost in a reel from 2003, simply install the spool on that reel, and you get the overhyped SV Boost. The only issue i have with older reels is that the gear sets are discontinued for many models, so you can't replace em when needed.

I went a different path and had newer reels, THEN discovered some of the unique Daiwa TDS, TDZ and TDX reels in LH with the clutch up on top for pitching, then expanded out from there to various TD Sol, TDZ ML, and TD Fuegos.

I have quite a few on various rods and use them quite a bit. You are correct that some parts are hard to get anymore, but fortunately I bought a few of the 7.1 conversion gear sets Tackle Trap had before they ran out so I have some spares.

Currently I have two TD Fuegos on ST Croix Mojo 7' MH-F rods for whopper ploppers, a TD 100ML on an old Fenwick Techna AV with MiniMax on it. A couple TDZ 103ML on Spinnerbait rods. I also have another pair of TD Fuegos on swim jig rods.

For older Shimano, I've got a Curado 201E7 on a Megabass Levante Diablo Spec R with spinnerbait on it and a pair of Calcutta 101s on Dobyns 736CB Glass for larger chatterbaits.

I really like the old reels. They are built like tanks and are still as smooth as can be. Not to say I don't have an array of newer stuff too, but they are both fun and share the attention.

OG Steez is my jerkbait reel

TDX air metal is my free rig reel

Calais 100a is a general purpose reel

Reel tech doesn't move nearly as fast as line, hook, or lure tech in my experience.

I wouldn't dream of using hooks and FC from the years those reels were made in.

OG Steez on Jerkbait rod

OG Fuegos on various random rods

OG Zillion on Frog and Flipping rod

Citica E on smaller swimbait rod

TDZ on Cranking rod

For $40-100 each they perform better than anything new in that price range.  Get them, clean up replace drags and I'm good to go.

I have Plenty of current reels and have no complaints about them but for me I like the OGs on a dollar per performance ratio.

My entire line up consists of almost all E series Curado's, a Citica and a "Chronrado". They just have that certain "mojo" to them.

The majority of my current Daiwa reels were models of at least 10 years old, and I only kept 5-6 new models. For Shimano though, it's the other way around.

Every reel I currently use is less than 5 years old. However, my kids still use one my granddad's old Zebco 33s. I have no idea how old that reel is.

I have one curado 301e and two citica 201i's used regularly and the rest of my baitcasters are newer than 4 to 5 years old.  I had a ton of 201e's, but have since moved on to newer models from shimano and daiwa.

No. The oldest I maintain for use is an FL Stradic. I upgrade about every 3 to 5 years.

The OG reels I own are so old that even a 10-15 year old reel is better.

All the reels I use are 5 years old or younger.

Curados, Citicas, Saharas, and one Calcutta (muskie fishing).

I have them serviced by a local guy every few years.  They are completely disassembled, cleaned, and lubricated.  $25 for a BC and $15 for spinning.

I intend to use these until they stop working.

chronado.  I like that. I assume you mean the white 200e series. I have one of those that’s come in and out of the rotation. It’s going back in for a dedicated swimbait rod. It’s a good compact form for a slightly bigger reel. My only issue (and maybe it’s just my reel) is that if there is tension on the line pulling against the spool when you press the button to cast it is very hard to depress. I have to use my thumb to relieve the tension a tiny bit to let it click easily. That could get to be a pain if I’m throwing 8” Magdrafts so let’s see.

I have a chronarch 100a downstairs that is probably the smoothest casting reel in this house (it would give my met a run for its money).  The gearing is fantastic and there isn’t the slightest hitch. My problem with it is the form factor. It’s a big chunk of a reel and sits high off the rod. On a standard Fuji casting seat (which all of my falcons have) it’s just too high to be comfortable. I might put it on a shimano crankbait rod which is a different seat, but I don’t fish crankbait enough to justify it.

"Chronado.  I like that. I assume you mean the white 200e series". Yup. Those are the ones. They took the Curado E series, slapped a new paint job on them and called them Chronarchs and called it a day.

The drag was slightly improved. And the drag star was some composite, plastic material. I had many of both. Paid far less than retail for them all, and they all worked great. Probably should have held on to them.

I’m a Shimano fan and used to sell my bait casters every time they introduced a new model.  That was until the Curado E came along.  Those were the first ones that I didn’t need to super tune.  I have kept all of them and use some of them every trip.

Are these OG reels?  I have another green Curado in the boat on my A-rig rod.  I do have several Zillions, Tatulas, and a newer Curado that are at the top of my arsenal but I still use all of these reels.IMG_0134.jpg.8cb755f489a054b4e8ad890503970218.jpg

The oldest reel I currently use is about 9 years old.  My older reels are all retired.

@ABU is overpriced: by your definition, all of my reels are old school.  I don’t think I bought a reel in over 10-12 years.
Still in use because it’s all I have:

shimano curado

201bsf

201d

101d

shimano Cardiff 301a - I don’t know if this reel has changed much since I’ve had mine from the mid 2000s.

pflueger trion - their tan colored 1st generation reel

shimano 2500 symetre- the older, light green one, probably from the 2004-2006 era.

My reels function well so I see no need to get more reels. I can honestly say this is where the bait monkey has not been able beat me in this arena, lol.

The bottom left one definitely is. I’ve got one exactly like it.

I had two Curado CU200's I bought off my buddy as my first "quality reels". Sold them in no time and went on to the more modern low profile reels. I'm in my 20's, and I have no clue in the world how y'all older folks used to bass fish all day with those Ambassadors and big Curados. I know they're bulletproof but I just can't see them being practical
