Bazoo Posted January 29 Posted January 29 I'll be taking a trip in a month or so to visit friends up in Humbolt County. I am completely clueless as to bass fishing around there. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted January 31 Super User Posted January 31 from what I know (little) that county is more salt water stuff, and trout(?) but if you head east a bit, you hit some awesome lakes. WhiskeyTown, Trinity, Shasta. all those lakes are loaded with the big three. Brownbass, greenness and spotted bass. I bundle up with warm stuff and I start hitting it in March for sure. Shasta people tell me (brag) that their lake has the biggest smallmouths, and you find them near the d**n. I cannot confirm because I suck at catching smallies. but one day, darn it!! one day!! you going to have a boat? it is raining. normally around here again, and the lakes are back up to awesome levels. heck it is raining now!! 1 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted February 1 Super User Posted February 1 As DB said, excellent saltwater and even steelhead fishing around there. Ruth Lake southeast of there near Mad River is your best "local" bet and a buddy of mine has had some really good trips there. Depending on which part of Humboldt County you'll be in, Clear Lake could also be well worth the drive (about 3 to 3.5 hours from the town of Eureka). Best of luck! Quote
Bazoo Posted February 2 Author Posted February 2 Thanks. I'll be up around Eureka, centered in McKinleyville. No boat. Quote
Goby Posted February 3 Posted February 3 I lived in McKinleyville for a while... If it was me and you have never been, I would make an honest effort to do a lot of site seeing, (Del Norte and Humboldt Counties) are the most incredible place in the lower 48... If you truly want/need to fish for Bass, you need to go East on the 299 a few hours from the 101... Tons of steelhead angling opportunities and one of very few places you can catch Cod from shore, the lagoons to the North on the 101 have some Largemouth, but I don't think it's incredible Bass fishing... I moved there to fish steelhead, was primarily what I did all over the North Coast and beyond... The Smith and Eel were my favorite rivers and largely why I moved there, but fish don't come super easy on them... The Lagoons would not require a boat and you never know what else you may catch, worth a shot... If you have never been to Eureka, it's one of the worst places on the planet in some ways, lots of hard drugs, severely mentally ill all over the streets, worst of the worst, much much better to pass on through that town, the rest are much much better to the North or South... You will see what I mean if you drive through... Quote
Bazoo Posted February 4 Author Posted February 4 Thanks Goby. Well, that's why I ask, I don't know anything about the place. Guns, reloading, knives, and fishing are my only interests. My wife wants to see some interesting stuff. I'm interested in seeing my buddy's guns and going to the range with him. My buddy chose to move there because of its beauty. I am thankful to live in a place that is more friendly to guns, and aligns more with my values. 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted Sunday at 04:48 PM Super User Posted Sunday at 04:48 PM wow. this thread almost made it without something coming up about CA's values and thought patterns. have a great trip. it is stunningly beautiful there. Quote
Bazoo Posted Monday at 12:51 AM Author Posted Monday at 12:51 AM It'll certainly be fun. I don't know that I'll be able to get into any bass fishing yet. But I do have some cool gun stuff planned. Quote
