Super User Darth-Baiter Posted January 29 Super User Posted January 29 I use 12 and 14lb Sunline Sniper for my local fishing exclusively. I seem to do well enough. Everyone tells me to go to Mexico heavily lined up. 16lb flouro (minimum)is most chatter. I had a roll of 15lb Assassin in my hands just now , but I put it back. I do like the 225 yard spools. That’s two loads. is a Mexican bass stronger than a US bass? The cover more abrasive? not like I go to Mexico all the time and I can’t head to the tackle shop, as needed. Go with what I know? Or go up in line strength? typical me, overthinking this. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 29 Super User Posted January 29 My very first trip south of the border (2013) my line selection looked like yours. Turns out is was Wildly Insufficient. I recommend NOTHING Less than 20 lb and 25 lb is not out of the question. I use both quite a bit there. I am going there to catch the fish of a life time, I want the odds in my favor. Even then, depending on the cover, I've had freight trains saw me off in a heart beat on trees and rock ledges. YMMV A-Jay 2 Quote
Gera Posted January 29 Posted January 29 Many of Mexico's artificial lakes the area was left as it was before they build the dam. You will find trees as they don't usually cut them like its done in the US (there are lakes were you can see orchards of large trees still line up underwater) houses, churches and other human made structure. So it wont hurt you to use the stronger line. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted January 29 Super User Posted January 29 When I went to Baccarac, we were told to bring a minimum of 20lb line, and they recommended that line be nylon. So I went with several spools of 20 and 25lb Berkeley Big Game. Seemed like a perfect choice. The cover can be abrasive. As@A-Jay mentioned, the cover is mainly submerged trees. Lots of rock structure as well. The trees are of the very tangly variety and you definitely don’t want to let a big Mexican bass bury down into them. I don’t remember ever seeing a single blade of aquatic grass or any type of seaweed. Quote
