Susky River Rat Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I don’t think there is any issue with buying it if you can afford it. When you feel like you need it but, can’t afford it that’s the problem. 1 1 Quote
Craig P Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I wish I had a lake near me to warrant a bigger boat. I am a fishing fool who can be easily separated from his wallet! LOL Quote
RLinNH Posted January 26 Posted January 26 I am in the same boat as you. I should of never sold my 16' Aluminum boat. I have a very nice fishing kayak, but d**n to I miss being COMFORTABLE while chasing my favorite species of fish. I'll keep paddling the kayak around as anything over $30,000 is above my budget. I am starting to seriously look at used boats nowadays. Quote

In the 60-80k price range locally there are several every week sold in season and around 3/4 per month in the winter. That’s at one dealership I frequent. And these numbers are nothing to the saltwater boats at 5 to 10 times the price. It’s all perspective. Heck I could never figure out who was purchasing the multi hundreds of new 800k/one million dollar + homes being built around town. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 26 Super User Posted January 26 I carried a million dollar liability and agreed price on my Bullet and that wasn't more than $400. When you bundle multiple vehicles, homeowners, riders for valuables, it's actually not that bad. 1 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted January 26 Posted January 26 My boat was 40k and was $258. I could see a bass boat being exspensive due to the speed. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 26 Super User Posted January 26 We are each different in what we feel good about when it come to 'insurance. I'm a fan of and am willing to pay for Total loss replacement Usually available for purchase if you’re the original owner of your boat and it’s no more than one model year old. Mine was new. If your boat is totaled within 5 model years, I get a new one or I'm reimbursed the amount that I originally paid for a totaled boat—my choice. If the rig is outside the 5 model-year window, I still get the original purchase price of the boat. Depreciation is also taken into account and covered. Bottom line is if in the unlikely event my rig is a total loss, I'm paying to recover the most I can get given the circumstances. Paying good money for less coverage does sit well with me. YMMV A-Jay Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 26 Super User Posted January 26 Try insuring a car for a teenage boy. Then come talk to me about high rates. Boat insurance is such a tiny line item in the total cost of ownership. It's barely a consideration for me. A-Jay brings up an interesting point about replacement. All my boats have been over a decade old, so I've paid for agreed value. When it comes time to buy, I may need to chat about it. 1 Quote

Super User J Francho Posted January 26 Super User Posted January 26 One other point, despite owning two very fast boats, I wasn't dinged for that. All the agent cared about was how much liability I needed and what it would cost to replace it. Nothing was said about its top speed. That might different elsewhere in the country. Quote
Super User gim Posted January 26 Author Super User Posted January 26 Minnesota actually does not require it unless there’s a lien holder. I would never go without it regardless. As @J Francho stated it’s such a minor cost of having a boat it would be foolish not to have it. 1 Quote
Susky River Rat Posted January 26 Posted January 26 @gim I agree. I will always have it on mine. 1 Quote

Super User Tennessee Boy Posted January 26 Super User Posted January 26 In the 90s I tried to get boat insurance from GEICO. They would not insure me be I fished tournaments. I ask why and they said because of the high speed races to fishing spots. I pointed out the my boats top speed was 35 mph. That didn’t matter, no GEICO insurance. Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted January 27 Super User Posted January 27 I'm just hoping that one of you guys will be willing to insure my old canoes. I can afford six bucks a year. Any takers? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 27 Super User Posted January 27 I'll do standard glass coverage for that. 1 Quote
Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted January 27 Global Moderator Posted January 27 I asked to keep it civil which went ignored. I cleaned up the bickering. Last chance to keep it civil. 1 Quote

It will have a swimming pool, helicopter pad, and discotheque. It will, of course, be impossible to paddle, so I'm hoping I can catch a bass while it's docked. Did Pocahontas carved the canoe herself?? 😁 Quote
