I just bought a Mitchell Avocent AV-S500UL from wally-world for $20.00.  I got it for finess fishing, such as shakey heads, small soft plastics, drop shot ect. ect.  I am guessing the UL in the reel code means "ultra lite". Is this going to work ok, or should I return this reel for the next size bigger? Thanks for the help.  Oh- I'd be using from 8-10lb line, probly mono or flouru.

bass_101,

Your right the UL designation means Ultra Light. For finesse fishing, such as shakey heads, small soft plastics, drop shots, ect. I wouldn't go much lighter than a 1500 series reel, with a 2000 series being best. Not so much a line size issue but a drag issue, the ultra lights just don't have enough.

Just my .02 ¢

Tight Lines!!!

Just remember that, all other things being equal, a given line performs better on a larger spool. Personally, I'd never use 8-10# line on a UL reel.

You might get 30 yards of 10 lb. on that reel.   ;D

Anything more than a 10 oz. bass on that reel will result in a 20 minute fight.

Take ReelMech's advice.

Thanks for all of the responses. I will be exchanging it for a 2000 series or 1500 series sometime soon. I have never purchased a reel seperate from the rod so I wasn't paying attention to the reel code thing. Thanks for the help. I didn't want to have the package opened and not be able to return it.

I think Ive got the same reel on an Ugly Stick. I use it for crappie/bluegill and have hooked quite a few bass in the process. Just let the fish tell you what to do. I had one incident where a 'gill hung up my favorite panther martin in a log :'(, but other than that i like it.

This reel seems like it would be great for panfishing, but not bassin'.  After looking it over a few times (which I should have done in the store  >;)  ) I can see that the spool is tiny.
