And the only way your MM gears don't go buzzy and grindy, is if you use your reel for presentations that have zero pull on the line, things such as jerkbaitin'.

Couldn't disagree more. Probably owned 25 different Shimano's at this point with mm gears, fishing every type of presentation. Including catching bigger fish like muskie, salmon, and steelhead. Not one single issue ever. They have all been absolutely fantastic.

It might not bother you, so you aren't really noticing it. I honestly don't know what else it could be. Gears are all the same, and i am certainly nowhere near the only one that complains about them.

I'm backing this up as well. I have several Daiwa and Shimano reels and have had no issues with Shimano gear sets. In fact, I brought in a 25+lb blue catfish on a Metanium and it was a blast. No issues with the reel. I have also lost track of the amount of 5lb+ Largemouth I have caught on Shimano BFS reels. Those reels would stand to have the lightest and least durable gears but they are fine, again no issues.

I have yet to see a bad set in any Shimano reels.  X-ship bearings, that's a different story.

"Bad gears" still function 100% in that as you turn the handle the spool will still spin backwards and recover line without issue.  It's the noise and vibration that develop over time that anglers dislike about the MM gears.  If you don't notice it then you don't notice it and should count yourself as lucky.  Those that do dispise it and go to great lengths with gear swaps to cure it.  The MM gear buzz is well documented but I only own a few MM Shimanos and they see lighter use and buzz the same amount as they did out of the box so I am wary of future MM Shimanos but still adding to the collection since I what I have experienced is more than tolerable and nothing out of the ordinary (smooth even).  Mine don't get a ton of use since I view centrifugal only reels as niche for long casting with braid but I still add Shimanos to the arsenal when needed.

The buzz is the X-Ship bearings. I have replaced several over the years for people. They will usually say that the gears are bad, I can feel it. All I do is either oil the bearings or replace them and grease the main gear. It's pretty easy and they are always magically surprised.

Most people won't take it out or oil it as one sits behind the pinion next to the frame so it gets neglected. I am not saying that a person can't destroy a gear set by fishing it hard but I have yet to see one.

^^this^^ I've dealt with the same thing personally more than a few times, I guess for some, it's easier to blame MM gears than to replace both X-ship bearings first.

It will start with the x ship bearing then the gears will wear and buzz even after x ship bearing replacement. If caught early it can be solved with a bearing replacement but any amount of play in the bearing and those MM gears lose their smoothness fast.

FF to 6:20, can someone explain to me what's causing that nasty sound on the retrieve?

That doesn't sound bad at all to me.  It sounds like most my non hyperdrive gears in my magnesium frame or aluminum frame with plastic hand side plate reels.  If that's the new Steez or the 70 Antares I would be upset with that level of noise.

Its not the Xship bearing. yes, shimano has the other issue (another ding at shimano's reliablity) with this particular bearing, but gear sound is unique, and you simply cannot mix it with a messy bearing. Just watching random youtube vids, you see plenty of people with a super buzzy gear set when using shimanos. Reminds me of the first gen Tatulas which were buzzing more than a bee, but at least those reels were cheap.

This sounds more like a dry gear set than a worn one.

I've worked on over a hundred Shimano reels and I can tell that is not the case. If you can find pics or videos that shows this I'd like to see it.

Also, it took me some time to fully get that it's not always the gears. I think if you search you'll find me complaining about the gears on a 2012 Antares.

Not sure i understand. You're saying that every time the reel has a buzzing sound, its related to the bearing and not the gears?

I guess what I'm saying is that the gears are probably the last thing it could be and that is most likely one of the two x-ship bearings.

Also.....It's a crapshoot sometimes when it comes to getting a new reel that is oiled and greased correctly. Some have it on too heavy and others are bone dry (the Tatulas are often this way, for example).  If they are making noise, greasing the gears fixes it. Daiwa makes a great gear grease by the way.

And there are also reels that have thin/light frame walls like the Aldebaran and Steez Air. You can feel the gears if they are not greased.

Yep,totally agree with your statement, the only time I ever had gear issues was on a 200 D, 5 to 1 that I’d crank deep divers on Kentucky lake. I knew a lady with a lake house and spent a good deal of time on the lake.

But I’m a firm believer that nothing could survive a season of deep cranking as it was well known to wear a reel down, any make. The gear sets were cheap in those days and easy to change. All my reels are Shimano, spinning, baitcast..
