Smirak Posted January 24 Posted January 24 So, since I am trying to fill my time with everything, I picked up a new airbrush from harbor freight. Got some older lures that I’m just starting with. I’m looking for some simple patterns/color theory lessons, etc to help move me along. I have a new airbrush on the way to replace the HF one, but have been using it now just trying to get a grip on control, issues, etc. Anyone have any advice? 1 Quote
spartyon8 Posted January 24 Posted January 24 I get my paints from Hobby Lobby and try to wait for the 40% off to hit. I started with the Harbor Freight Avanti kit and quickly bought a badger which made a world of difference. I bought a bunch of cheap exacto knives and use the "pen" to hold lures. I sit them in a 4x4 block that I drilled holes into. Walmart has some color changing acrylics that I really like but you need to thin them out a ton and add about 2-3x the layers to achieve a good effect. I also use uv resin instead of spray clears, dipping or epoxy. The fabric store has all sorts of materials for scaling patterns. Practice...practice....practice. Do this on a poster board or even paper grocery bags to see how air pressure and trigger control changes how the paints lays down. It's a great time consuming and mental break! 1 Quote
Smirak Posted January 24 Author Posted January 24 Thanks @spartyon8 I went and donated double red and platelets at my local life south and for a $40 Amazon gift card 😂😂. I donate anyway, but it was a win-win. I purchased the Neoeco that engineered angler, as well as many others on YouTube, we’re reviewing. Will be here Tuesday, so I’ll take it for a test drive. I used the createx and others from HL. I also am using the golden high flow from Michaels. Right now, I’m just trying to dial in the airbrush techniques and color theory stuff. I have some Vallejo shifters and have enjoyed figuring out the differences based off of different color base coats. I have a red/gold shifter that is beautiful green/pink/magenta/awesome when on a black base coat… 1 Quote
Smirak Posted January 29 Author Posted January 29 I painted this the other day. Nothing special, but the first one I’ve painted. No clear coat on it, just an older CB that I was using for test purposes.. 5 Quote
detroit1 Posted January 31 Posted January 31 If that is your first, you will be an excellent painter. If you find a seal coat that leaves a flat finish let us know... 1 Quote
Smirak Posted January 31 Author Posted January 31 I literally have zero art skills. I’m a woodworker by hobby, and thought I’d try my hand at making some wooden baits. I did a few smaller swimbaits, but then realized I didn’t know how to paint them. I have scoured YouTube and watched quite a few artists, not just lure makers (I love watching lowrider/old skool designs being masked off and painted)… since I’m “retired/disabled”, I have a lot of time on my hands. So I’ve watched quite a bit. I have a couple dozen older BPS cranks and jerkbaits that I found somewhere and am using those as test dummies. What really got me though was I bought a DRT Klash 9 for about $125. Then, I went and bought a few knockoffs to paint. That’s what started me down this rabbit hole. Quote
Super User Munkin Posted February 1 Super User Posted February 1 You are off to a great start. For other patterns the easiest thing to do is use stencils. Most places that sell lure blanks sell stencils. Allen Quote
