We of the southland are getting a dose of what our northern BR brethren experience every year so it poses a question. What do you guys do all winter? I am grappling with cabin fever because my pond is frozen solid, my home gym attached to my garage is so cold I cannot use it, it's too cold to work on farm equipment, way too cold to build anything, just walking the farm is painful. My wife is close to justifiable homicide so please offer suggestions, and remember, keep your answers G-Rated. This is a family forum!

We didn't get snow like a few weeks ago, but I've been couped up the last 4 days and I'm about to go bananas.   Today the high is still only low 30s, but I've gotta get a few hours outside at least.     I can't find anything to do when it's cold after the first day or two when I finish all the chores around the house.

Yanks and Canucks are built out of something different.    I have no idea how they deal with winters.   I can hardly manage 7-10 days a season.

It's 20 and our lakes and ponds are frozen again.  This winter has been the most wintery in the 4 years I've been seriously fishing - I did a full inventory and organization thing and cleaned and oiled my reels etc.

Got my tackle selection for when the lakes warm up ready to rock and roll.

The good news is when it lets up - it's probably gonna be go time in a big way.

Just hard to say exactly when that will be.

Surface temps last weekend after a major warm up with rain were still 36°.

Now they're 32° 🥹

Seeing the pictures of several inches of snow on Panama City and Destin beaches is pretty mind blowing........Key West will be our only refuge 😁

Northern folks know what's coming and prepare for it. Or at least they better. So no home gym in an unheated garage.  Snow removal every few days is normal. As is learning to slow your roll.  Here's a novel idea, read a book.

Good Luck.

I organize my tackle again and again, scout new bodies of water, organize my tackle yet again, stare at my boat, organize my tackle again still…

Mostly that, but during the winter I play video games to pass the time.

Fortnite.

Lol, but in addition to that, I ski A LOT, coach baseball two days a week, basketball 3 days a week, I just gave the shop its annual cleaning, and on the weekends currently I am finding a couple hours to break away for steelhead fishing as they are almost at the peak of the winter run.

Going to go far enough south to find the warmth.  Leaving on the 31st for Headwaters in Fellsmere, Florida.  You southerners make sure you have the roads cleared enough for me to pass through.  Here at home we fish the discharge cooling ponds of a nuke site.  Three 3,000 acre pools connected by canals.  If we can get there, we can fish.  Water stays 55-60 and ramps don’t freeze.

I am kind of in the middle not really north or south.  I planned for this kind of weather when we built our house.  I had the garage walls insulated and the garage ceiling heavily insulated.  It doesn’t get below the mid 50s out there.  We’ve been from 1-15° for the last several days.  I’ve been pouring and painting Ned jig heads.  It is supposed to be in the 40s by Saturday so I am getting the boat ready.

Once Christmas is over and winter really locks in, I pretty much suffer through it.  I do a little rabbit hunting for fresh air and fun, go the gym, fight whatever gd cold is going through our house (I’m sick right now) and hopefully just stay busy with work.  Watch YouTube videos about fishing, maybe get to the shooting range on a mild day.  Thankfully we don’t live in a really cold part of Canada, but winter is usually a damp cold, add some wind and the odd ice storm and it’s miserable.

I used to not mind winter when I was young, but now I dream about spending Jan-Feb in Florida (the pre-global warming Florida, not the snowy nonsense that is currently happening).  Hopefully I’m able to spend some winter time in the south when I’m retired. 🤞🏻

It got down into the single digits last night and my local lake has a thin sheet of ice over it in the creeks.  I just drove by a ramp and the ice was broken where someone launched this morning.  Some people just want it more than others.  I'm not one of them.

My home gym has two heaters! It is still 35 deg. in there! I'm with you on the book thing. I read religiously. Just finished one about the Whaleship Essex, and now I'm halfway into the Mayflower/Plymouth colony moving towards King Phillips war.

I run a heater in my gym ALL year and it's in the basement of my home.

I don't like to train when I'm cold and the average temp down there 's @ 60 all year.  Small heater does the trick.

I read as well. All types of stuff from history to Crime and who done it novels, you name it.

Even did a long string of Stephen King books.

Forgot how good they were.

It's a Huge escape for me.

Ear plugs and a couple of dogs at my side, wood stove cranking and I am good to go !

Good Luck Sir.

So far I have loaded up the tackle bag with cold water baits, sharpened hooks, and started cleaning reels.  I have about 1/2 of the reels cleaned, and with this cold, I am in no hurry to get the job done.  Getting ready to do some online shopping to see what is new and available.
