papajoe222 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I prefer slower reels for cranking and it seems that choices under this are really hard to find. Add to that, I prefer Daiwa's and apart from a Fuego I switched gears in, I'm at a loss. I am in need of one as I retired most of my Sols. Any recommendations? Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted January 21 Super User Posted January 21 Daiwa has a 5.5 to 1 in the Zillion and Tatula 150 . I have one of each and like both.👍👍 3 Quote
Junger Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I have the Tatula CT 5.5 (TACT100P), and an older Alphas SV105HP 5.8 and both are really smooth. I carry a Ray's shallow spool for the Alphas so I can throw really light crank baits for creek/trout fishing. You'll likely only find these used on eBay or for trade/sale fishing forums, but if you want brand new, the ones Columbia Craw noted would be great reels. 1 Quote

papajoe222 Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 I’m not a big fan of Tatula’s T-wing, just dislike change, but I did get a set of their gears to convert a Fuego, which I may do again. I prefer not using my Sols or Alpha for cranking, but for smaller cranks I still use a Sol. 1 Quote

Might end up re-homing these and getting a few more Bantam's. I'm not quite maxed out. Close though. Good Luck. A-Jay Quote
LootyDjibouti Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Ark Gravity's (3, 5, 7) come in a 5.4. I picked up a G5 in the 5-speed for mid-deep cranking but admittedly have not used it yet as I'm iced out. 1 Quote
Texas Flood Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I use a JDM Daiwa Steez A TW 6.3 for cranks and I love it. I know you said under but if you were looking at something right at 6.3, take a look at the Steez. 1 Quote

Mines a 6 speed but i only use it for swim jigs and spinnerbaits. It doesnt cast lighter lures as well as my T winged Tatulas (1/4-3/8 just doesnt cut it). I would suggest using the conversion you already have the parts for if using heavier cranks, if lighter maybe add a shallow spool too. But Lews did just release the new LFS Gen 3, comes in a 5 speed. The LFS while often hated on for not being a Daiwa or Shimano is an underdog reel. Looks not so good, no fancy coatings, but casts a wide variety of baits very well, and lasts a long time. On sale they are dirt cheap too. 3 Quote

I have 4 Calcuttas for cranking (I would highly recommend this reel as well) and yet I still reach for the Steez as my primary cranking reel. I did replace the handle though. 2 Quote
Bigbox99 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 Aliexpress Tatula 150 for $100ish and a 5.5:1 gear set from TTT. I'll be doing this with a Tatula 200 7:1 to both make deep cranking reel and get a new 7:1 gear set to swap into my old Tatula HD Custom 6:1. Quote

Is it a big difference using that handle instead of the original one? 1 Quote
Eric 26 Posted January 21 Posted January 21 I know you said you’re a Daiwa fan as I also am but Abu Garcia offers a few different options in 5 speed reels and ironically enough there is currently an Abu discussion taking place. The Revo X is right around $120.00 and offered in 5.4:1 in both left and right hand retrieves. 2 Quote

For deep cranks yes. I have Gomexus 100m handles on two other cranking reels. I might do one more in the future. The one in the picture has titanium knobs. They are smooth but a little slick. I actually like the bigger sponge grips better. I kinda thought this handle would look cool. 1 Quote

papajoe222 Posted January 21 Author Posted January 21 Thanks everyone. I'm not stuck on going with Daiwa and I do have and use other reels. Hopefully there'll be a sale before the season up here and I can get a deal on one of the suggestions. I have a hard time justifying another reel purchase to the Mrs., but she swallows the pill easier if it's on sale. 1 Quote

I don't know what your budget is but you can get a JDM Conquest 200 (which is the size of the old 100) for around $325. The US price is $600. If it matters, it looks like the parts might be the same. It also has a 4.8:1 ratio. Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted January 22 Super User Posted January 22 Look at Reno 5 Orra Winch. 5:4-1 and long handle. Centrifugal brakes. There are a couple positive reviews. FYI 1 Quote
