I have a few, but there is clearly a sensitivity difference between 2 rods.

My 844 MBR and my 895 F&P

My 895 has exceptional feel for a xtra heavy flip rod. You pick up the rod and it’s just got the 844 beat all to hell..

Any guess why this is? I’m taking a stab here and saying it’s a characteristic of the MBR series but idk, as usual I’m asking here because I’m interested in what you guys, rod builders, might have to say.

The MBR 844 is an old design, originally probably mid seventies IM6 and progressed through the carbons, the GLX is close to 30 years old itself, and frankly the 843 and 844 have never been a favorite of mine, the 783 and 784 were just superior in my eyes. The 783 is night and day better than the 843. Your other rod has length on its side and is a newer design, it doesn't surprise me these two things make it a better rod in your eyes.  Keeping the weight down as you go longer makes for a better rod, simple physics.

I read so much about the 844 MBR. Most of the negativity was about the tip / action being a bit too soft rather than being a dud on sensitivity.. my favorite bait shop had to close his doors 2 years after BPS opened up in Clarksville, In. Otherwise I’d had hands on before. I’m not saying it’s unusable, but for the money it’s a dud. There are no rod builders in my area anymore either.. I talked to Trey K, back in late summer and his top rod is made with a Stryker blank, ok great but then he said it’s a bit to soft! I’m looking for a jig rod 3/8 to 1/2 w trailer. I like a stiff tip. I can cast fine with a more rigid rod. In fact throwing a 1/2 ounce on the xtra heavy 895 F&P is quite nice.. go figure. Have you any rod recommendations for pitching jigs and larger Trigs?

BTW, I appreciate your knowledge on this.

I'm going back to the 90's but the IMX MBR844C was a staple rod that every rod built by anyone was compared to. The IMX 844 was the rod to have or the 783 or 784.

For me they still are to this day. I find them perfect for the way I fish, 783c, 784c and 844c MBR’s.The only technique specific rod I own is a GLX MBR 804c JWR which is my dedicated t-rig, jig and creature bait rod. I throw 1/2 oz w/trailers, creating a 3/4 ish bait just fine. The only 7/8-1oz bait is a punch jig which I throw on the same rod, very seldom, which it handles fine .

I find the MBR rods fantastic!

A longer rod will generally be more sensitive than a shorter one....Lots of caveats in that statement, but could be part of the difference if they are otherwise similar.

As for a good jig rod blank for bigger jigs - I really like the Point Blank 73HXF and the NFC HM MB709.  They are both close in power and will handle a 1/2oz jig very well.  The PB would be good if you prefer a faster tip, the NFC would be good if you like the traditional mag-bass, mod-fast type of tip.  Based on what you posted about liking a stiffer tip, the NFC 709 might be the one to try.

Yes I do prefer a stiffer tip. The 844c and the 895 F&P xtra heavy are about a year old and both were purchased new. Both GLX . Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying it’s subpar but compared to my 895 it’s no contest.

I love NFC rods and have 4. I’ve read a lot of good about PB also. I’m definitely in the market for a rigid 7 footer w excellent sensitivity. Appreciate your post.

Definitely try a Point Blank if you like high end stuff and don't already have one.
