10,000 lakes Bassin Posted January 18 Posted January 18 I’ve been shopping for a jig rod that fits my style of jig fishing, using braid to leader, and fishing jigs in decently think grass. Since I’ll be using braid, I’d like a rod that is on the slow side of fast, maybe all the way down to mod-fast, but either way enough power to flip jigs up to 3/4oz. I know the g. loomis magbass actions are know for their versatility but because it would be a designated jig rod, I wouldn’t need it to be used for anything else. The loomis I was looking at was the IMX pro 904mbr. I feel like the extra length would be nice to help pull them out of the grass. How to you feel about that rod being used for my purpose? Im open to other suggestions also, ideally under $400 Quote
softwateronly Posted January 19 Posted January 19 While I love the tip on my 904mbr for swim jigs, it is a touch too soft to really shake it through the heaviest of cover. When the jig hangs on the weeds, the tip loads a bit too much for me to retain control of it as it pops free. So i usually stay around 1/2oz in these situations. This might not bother you and you will certainly catch fish with it. Just my preference, my two jig rods are Steez perfect pitch 7'2H/F and MC Days360 6'6MH/F. 2nd gen Poison Adrena 7'6XH has a tip that I like more for jigs in heavy cover. Still soft, just loads deeper so the jig doesn't rocket free when it finally lets go. Feels like a 904.5 in a lot of ways. When I do pitch, this my choice. scott 1 Quote

I should have said that I also do a good amount of casting jigs in deeper water and thinner grass. You think an extra heavy and braid will be too much for this, or would I be better of with a different rod for that. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 19 Super User Posted January 19 That’s a falcon amistad for me. 1/2-3/4 jigs and Texas rigs. I have thrown braid and mono and on two different variations of the rod (expert and Cara). The Cara is what you want for what you’re describing. 7’3”, 1/2-1.5 rating. Rated as fast and that’s probably accurate but it’s not a poker. You’ll get a third or halfway down the rod on a hook set. Pitch or cast with it. And $250. 1 Quote

I have 30lb braid and bounce between 16 and 25lb mono and floro. It's really versatile and feels like a heavy+ to me; pitch jigs and free rigs, swim jigs, swimbaits, spoons, and carolina rigs. scott Edit: I'm talking about the 2018 PA 7'6XH/RF. I haven't held the new one which have slightly different actions says folks on here. 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted January 20 Posted January 20 You would probably like the JDM F tapers. Theyre generally slower than most of the tapers here in the US. Either way when you get to rods over 7'4 the tip section is longer, and the actions tend be softer. So long as its not a broomstick, a 7'4 or 7'6 F has a slower action compared to a shorter H F. I really liked the older MBRs for swimming a bucktail and soft plastics for inshore fish. I could see the 904MBR being good for open water jigs, especially football jigs, but personally, I like FC and prefer a little faster taper when working a jig through cover or dragging it on the bottom. Theres no shortage of 7'5 and 7'6 rods that are right up your alley, so option are many. Only you really know what you like and that's the most important facet to this. My best advice would be to get the 904 in your hands before you make a decision. 1 Quote
