Super User FishTank Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 Vinyl only.... It's this kind of night. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 I have a collection of jazz on vinyl, but nothing to play it on anymore. It's all on CDs now, which I don't listen to either. Every thing I listen to is on Pandora. Mostly classic rock and smooth jazz. 1 Quote
MediumMouthBass Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Man, back when music was music. What ever happened, and how did we get here. If i had some records id be blasting Metallica, ACDC, Ozzy, Sabbath, maybe some Dokken, Whitesnake, Cinderella, Van Halen just to check out how it was back then. I had most on repeat today and tonight on Spotify but it just feels like somethings missing. Help a fella out and make sure to play some No Sleep Till Brooklyn for me. 1 Quote

Records are more popular than anything non digital right now , they’ve made quite the comeback We have been listening to Rachel Baiman play the fiddle, got the record at one of her concerts. She plays shows with a few of my fishing buddies 3 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 My ex got ended up with my hundreds and hundreds of LPs, most from Columbia Record Club. I was never a very serious audiophile and streaming Prime Music is more than sufficient for me now. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 I’ve gotten rid of most of my vinyl. I was there and had a huge collection back in the day. I don’t believe the current vinyl fad will stick around. People will realize that and the nostalgia will wear off. They’ll go back to digital streaming. Vinyl are a pain to deal with and do not sound better, especially on the junk equipment most people use to play them on. Think analog sounds better than digital? If the record was manufactured after the year 2000, it was made from a digital recording. The only thing about records that’s better is the packaging. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Never really got in to vinyl. Went from tapes right to CD's. Now I've got a Youtube premium account, and set up playlists with the music I want. I do have some old iTouch around. Link them to my old Techniques receivers that are still wired to the EPI speakers. I have a set of EPI A140 in the garage. And a set of EPI A70's down in the shop. Still sound amazing!! I mowed lawns all summer to purchase the A140's when I was in middle school. Guy on the web still sells parts. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 Technics BT turntable with line level out to a pair of BT speakers with a built in amp. We also have a full DJ set up that's way too heavy to get out of storage. I have a ton of vinyl. There's another six crates or so of old box sets. Say hello to the queen. 2 Quote

I agree and have always been fascinated by claims that vinyl produces superior sound. I saw Neal Young on some talk show years ago claiming CDs could never sound as good as vinyl. Yes vinyl sounds different. Some may like the sound of vinyl better. I would be willing to bet that if you recorded a vinyl record with high quality digital equipment, that Neal Young or anyone else would be able to distinguish it from the original vinyl record. Quote

Two of my favorites in recent rotation...The Yes Album and Hemispheres if I am not mistaken. Possibly Argus, also. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 Vinyl is before my time. CDs were the craze when I was younger. I still have a lot of them, and the old school AIWA 3 disc changer with woofers in the basement. I get that thing going when I'm down there folding laundry, cleaning guns, etc. Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 My Dad listened to music on tape from a reel to reel when I was a kid. Wish I still had that. I imagine replacing 'the tubes' might be a challenge 60 or so years later. Before I enlisted I used to install 8 track players in vehicles. Everything old is new again. 😎 A-Jay 2 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 I actually have a reel to reel in the attic. It weighs a TON. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted January 15 Super User Posted January 15 Back in the late 70s and early 80s I had around 100-120 rock albums. When CDs came out I started listening to those. About 10 years ago we had an auction and sold off all of the albums. Now I stream 95% of everything I listen to. 1 Quote

Super User gim Posted January 16 Super User Posted January 16 I’m a similar age as you @DitchPanda. I got mine I want to say around early high school. So probably not long after you. I’ll try to take a photo of it. It plays good quality music. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 16 Super User Posted January 16 My observation at my local record stores is that most people buying vinyl are too young to even remember a time before CDs, MP3s, or streaming. What's funny is the latest trend is back to CDs. There is also momentum in cassettes, which cracks me up. I liked recording CDs or vinyl to cassette so that I could play along on the drums without the record or CD skipping. In the early days, I'd tape a couple pennies to the head of the tone arm to prevent skipping, but the records would wear out in a couple of months. No biggie, since brand new albums were like $5 back in the 80s. As far as what "sounds" better has more to do with what target format the mastering was biased for. That doesn't mean just because it was recorded digitally that it is always best reproduced that way. For the record (pun alert) the last two albums my band did were analog until very late in the process, after mixing. Even the mic preamps were tube. Why? Because it was an interesting way to record. 1 Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted January 16 Super User Posted January 16 Cassettes certainly carved a strong niche despite the fragility. Sharing music, portability, mix tapes, and recording radio shows like King Biscuit Flower Hour were revolutionary for me. I was very slow to CDs, as I didn't see value over LPs and cassettes, especially since there was no way to record for many years. I was violently opposed to buying music I already had in a different format. Very happy to stream now without paying for replacement albums. Quote
Bazoo Posted January 16 Posted January 16 I don't do records at all, though I have in the past. My preference for music is Bluegrass, Southern Gospel, and old Hymns. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted January 18 Super User Posted January 18 ^^ This is my preference too. I still have some old records from the 70s and 80s. Mostly bluegrass. @Bazoo , who are your favorite bluegrass and bluegrass gospel groups? Quote
Super User J Francho Posted January 18 Super User Posted January 18 I'm not a huge fan of gospel, but my wife sings in a gospel choir and sometimes I fill in on drums. It's a ton of fun to play and reminds me a bit of big band in the way the section hits and turns are so syncopated. You have to keep your head on a swivel and listen to the keys to know when to push and pull. Quote

Those are the only ones I can think of right off hand. For regular bluegrass I like Flatt and Scruggs, with Foggy Mountain Breakdown being my favorite. We don't have a bluegrass station here anymore, all we get is an hour or two on the weekends. Odd, because I'm just up the road from Rosine, where Bill Monroe is from. I remember years back there was a bluegrass station we listened to all day every day at work, but it's been so long I don't really remember. Aint been a bluegrass station on the air for 20 years here. There is my favorite song, though it is southern gospel rather than bluegrass - 1 Quote
