Here's a photo of my fishing gear storage system. Basically it's a mixture of clear-ish storage drawer organizers, and while it works the drawers always seem jerky and don't always slide open smoothly. I'm wondering if anybody can recommend an improved solution that doesn't need any more storage space than what I am using here. One redeeming feature of these is that they are clear/semi-clear which helps to recognize at-a-glance what is in some of the drawers even though I have tried to label them.

How handy are you? I built a storage system (not for fishing gear) using plastic tubs with lids from Home Depot. 2X4 supports and 1X1 runners for the drawers. I added ball bearings to the underside of the lids for the bottom, heavy contents drawers. My daughter has it in her garage now. 😂

Get pegboard, put it up against that wall. This will store a lot of soft plastics, lures, terminal tackle still in packaging. Theres also bins that will attach to peg board too, will help store odd items.

And youll still have those 2 racks/shelves attached to the wall, put a long but not too high single drawer across each one. Stack anything larger on top of them.

For line, take a wooden dowel, or even something made of metal thats similar diameter, and slide the spools of line through it like a kabob, find a way to make a quick release method (for changing empty ones) that would let you hang it to the bottom of the 3rd rack on the wall.

The bottom area next to coolers would be good for throwing tackle storage bags, and stacking trays.

I'm hoping to find a more robust set of drawers/cabinets and not build something

I would rather buy a new rod/reel combo than to spend $$$ on better storage bins.   #it'lldo

I don't fly fish, but this week accidentally stumbled across an extensive fly fishing store which was selling out to the bare floors (nasty divorce scored again).  I had been unaware of many of the specialized storage and display components used as compared to a typical tackle shop.  I filled my 8 ft. pickup bed twice, at a total cost of $145.  Examples are "drawer cabinets $20, nearly 200 slatwall hooks $9, stackable storage bins .10 cents each,  28 Plano lure boxes .25 cents each, 100 yd. leader material, thinner and stronger than anything from Sunline and Seaguar for 60% off", the list goes on.  I already had installed vinyl slatwall in my man cave, 7 feet high and 35 feet in length, adding self made and painted 10 inch shelves.  Just visit some fly fishing shops to see what space saving fixtures they use and we don't ordinarily see.  I also highly recommend vinyl slatwall over the wooden variety and pegboard.

Or estate sales, you’ll be surprised at what fishing gear you find at them too.

I will NEVER share a photo of my fishing gear storage. I don't want to give @A-Jay a heart attack.

I've outgrown this already but I have limited space. A variety of plastic containers, mostly Plano 3600 & 3700 series Stowaways. What I found to be most important is a good labeling system.

What you decide on is dependent on how much room that is available, how much $$$$ you want to invest, what you want to store, and how deep you want to go down the DIY hole.

Well there's only one solution here.

Build a new tackle shed like @NorthernBasser and try to fill that sucker up with enough tackle for every angler in North America.

I have those drawers.  The base is too light so they get jerky and slide around.

Here's my MacGyver for you...

Take out all the drawers.

Drill holes in the base.

Big boy zip tie them to the wire racks

Put drawers back in.

BONUS... put some wood under the base (same thickness as base) and drill through that as well so the zip ties pull against it and the plastic when you use the drawers.  Added stiffness and weight helps too.

Pegboard is the best for plastics and a shelf with planos for hard baits.  But wanting to keep the footprint you have, do the zip tie and drill method.
