I do not shop much through Amazon, but have accumulated a decent chunk of change in gift cards and was thinking of putting them to use.  Has anyone ever ordered a reel or rod through Amazon?  Looking at Shimano reels and NRX+ rods I have noticed that they are sold by various sellers.  I don't want to get a lemon or a fake.  How trust worthy is Amazon with this stuff?

Yea a number of times both direct from Amazon, sellers shipped by Amazon, and Amazon Japan.

Highly unlikely you would get a counterfeit, I don't think they even really exist, there are clones but not 1:1 fakes.

The worst that could really happen is you get a returned/used reel sold as new since Amazon doesn't sanitize their inventory.

I've ordered 8 or 10 reels from Amazon and haven't had any problems.

Idk .... arguably the best thing that can happen. I received a surf rod with a busted eye and they issued full refund with no need to return.

Depends on the product I suppose. They sent me a used Columbia PFG shirt with stains still in the green plastic return bag once, but the return/replacement was painless. I've also hit the Amazon lottery a couple times on fishing gear. 5 pack box of jackhammers, 4 pack box of 1oz kastmasters, and a bag with 5 packs of adrenaline craws. No cases of reels yet unfortunately.

I’ve  purchased lower end reels Piscifun and Kast King along with my Dream Tackle reel through Amazon and the process was straight forward and very quick. I did order a 13 fishing rod to exchange for a rod my son bought me for Christmas through Amazon and although not pleased with the packaging both rods were delivered without a problem.

No Issues at all with reels.

My friend was in your situation. They told him not to return the Okuma SBX swimbait rod he bought since the top guide was broken and sent him a new one.

He gave me the rod with the broken guide and I replaced the broken guide with a new factory guide and ended up with a freebie.

If you order from an Amazon seller you are not ordering from amazon although it may be shipped from Amazon.  Always check a product you are considering buying to see if it is sold by Amazon or an Amazon seller.  If it is a seller,  be sure to check their rating.

Some sellers have a 50-100% restocking free as well, even if shipped the wrong item. Make sure you check their reviews.

For US Amazon, rods almost always come broken. Not sure if Japan ships with more care.

Reels are often used returns, sometimes even the wrong reel. Theres been a few times people have bought $150 reels and returned them with a $30 reel from Walmart. And it makes the next guy to buy it very upset.

Lures are hit or miss with getting a bunch. Sometimes you order 1, you get 1. Other times you order 1, get a box of 5-10. This is usually the case with anything made by Berkley, since the whole case is stamped with the 1 item number on the side.

Any issues mentioned above Amazon will correct, it just might take a week or 2 to get the right/new/unbroken rod or reel.

None of this is true on any sort of scale. It may have happened once and been inflated by the internet, but I have been buying rods on Amazon for a decade and never had a broken one. Or any problems with reels purchased there.

I’ve bought a bunch of Alphas, Zillion and Steez SV reels off of Amazon with no issues. All brand new and in perfect working order out of the box

I've bought 2 rods, no issues. Reels as well, some jdm, shipped free from Japan and pretty quick too. Lures, plastics, and terminal tackle. There are some really good sellers with good prices on name brand stuff. I mainly use Kastking hammer braid,  great line!

Ah yes, the "heres my 1 person experience, ive been doing this for so long and im fine" so its not true saying. Tons of people smoke every day? They dont have cancer, so that must be false too! Right?

Look on reddit, each weeks theres a "rod came broken" post.

Look at the reviews on Amazon, "rod came broken" plus a picture, "reel was not the right one".

I will admit its not happening to every order, but it happens more than it should. A lot more.

Especially with Amazon being a company that does returns without checking the item sent back or its condition. Which is why theres been numerous amounts of times people got the wrong item, or a previously used one.

In my other hobbies its even worse, people getting fake Eotechs, Surefires, etc.... And these cost way more than most rods and reels.

But Amazon is good at making things right, buy with confidence using them. Like i said already, i just pointed out the issues that may occur with them. That have happened over and over again.

In most cases the rod and reel will be shipped out fine, but not all.

Don’t know if this is everywhere, but I get $40 in Amazon gift cards every time I donate either platelets or double red blood through Life South. I donate as often as they’ll let me and let those Amazon cards build up. Also, if you take your change to one of them countin machines, you can get it out in cash, minus a fee OR Amazon gift cards (I believe there are others as well) dollar for dollar. I’ve done that a few times as well. I have an old metal tin that a fifth of Jack Daniels came in that is my change bucket…I get about $100 or so every year from that.

I wouldn't recommend buying rods from them, but I've never had an issue with reels. I got a fantastic deal on a couple Daiwa Lexa HD's last winter. They were brand new, in sealed boxes.

Well, I bought an SLP Works Zillion from Amazon, and it didn't come with a spool, and it didn't come with a handle

...... oh yeah........ that's why I bought it.

I'm the guy who always puts Amazon links on the forum when we're talking JDM prices.  Especially with "Prime free shipping" buying Amazon is kind of a no-brainer.  Buying from Amazon, you can also return it locally.

https://www.amazon.com/Daiwa-Gillion-1000L-Handle-Model/dp/B08NP1WDHM/ref=asc_df_B08NP1WDHM

I've been buying in Japan since 2005, when google beta-translate Japanese didn't work, and you had to buy using a broker so the seller could get paid (Japan banking laws), he knows the language, and because you needed the broker for shipping.  Buying direct from Japan is a very new thing.  I still use my broker to buy from Yahoo, Rakuten, and the 99% rest of Japan, who don't care about our market or language.

I have both US Prime account and amazon.jp account.  If it comes from Amazon warehouse, you get the prime free shipping (or amazon.jp broker shipping rate) - if shipping is priced crazy, it doesn't.  When I buy Japanese from Amazon, I will put the same item in both carts and check the total - usually it doesn't matter, and buying through Prime is the best price.  If you don't have a Prime membership, buying a one-month Prime membership is cheaper than express shipping from Japan.  Plus buying from US Amazon gives you the local return option, though we've talked before about JDM warranty and seppuku.

amazon in general - it's amazing what you can get delivered tomorrow with free shipping - tools, fasteners, garbage disposal, oven heater coil, car parts, lures, hooks - in many cases, the prices are cheaper than retail stores - and they do the driving.  Kinda the point of internet shopping - shop around - but paying USPS/UPS/FedEx on individual purchases adds up to the prime membership.*

@Craig P - that's not exactly the case - it's sold by Amazon, and they get a better wholesale deal by making it look like Shimano, Daiwa has an "Amazon store"

* last night I bought Cajun Thunder cigar corks and Owner hooks from Amazon - $25 compared to $40 mailed from Roy's Bait & Tackle .

My last purchase on Amazon for fishing stuff was a BFS reel and while that was being sold on Amazon, it was sold by Shimano so just to be sure to check the seller.
