wdp Posted January 13 Posted January 13 Saw one of the local news outlets in Memphis posted this on Facebook recently. Shows the Bass Pro at The Pyramid during all the snow on Friday. Pretty cool shot. Supposedly we got around 7” of snow……… don’t laugh all you Yankees! 🤣 That’s a lot for us down here in the South. We don’t know how to drive in this stuff. 🥴 6 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted January 13 Super User Posted January 13 This is actually the 10th largest pyramid in the world. True story. 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 13 Global Moderator Posted January 13 My buddy lives just outside of Memphis and he said they got 8” so I’d say that’s accurate ! We didn’t get quite that much out this way Quote
wdp Posted January 13 Author Posted January 13 @TnRiver46 yep, I’m close too, live in MS just south of Memphis. I would say we def got 7-8”. Thankfully, most of it has melted & roads are good. @Jar11591 learn something new everyday. Did not know that fact about the Memphis pyramid. Quote
Functional Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I always made fun of southerners and how they cant drive in the snow until I moved down here. My first winter in the south we got 5 inches (a LOT for the area I'm at) in one night. They just plain dont have the equipment or road prep like northern states do. It was actually easier to drive in the fresh snow (my job requires I go in during those events) but the next evening when some of it melted and everything became a sheet of ice for 4 days was crazy. So now wiser, I take it all back lol. 3 Quote
Smirak Posted January 13 Posted January 13 I used to live in Mew Hampshire. They don’t know how to drive in the snow either. Rey common misconception 😂😂 I remember the “big snow” back in like 14 that shut down Atlanta. I had actually flown to NH that weekend for the job interview that I ultimately took. I was living in Atlanta at the time. I remember them saying “yall don’t know how to drive in Atlanta, do you”. Well, let’s see…mayor of Atlanta let nearly 300k kids out of school AT ONE TIME. I heard that something like 75k tractor trailers transit the I75/I85/I20 corridor in Atlanta daily. Combine all that with one wreck, and you have people abandoning their cars on the side of the road… Quote

Our only hope is that sun comes out & warms/dries roads up enough to prevent the ice. Which happened this time, thankfully. Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted January 14 Super User Posted January 14 Maybe that snow will reduce the vehicle break-ins in the parking lot. 😖 Quote

I suspect a combination of imports from other states and 'city' locals. Out here in the countryside its better, but when I have to drive into the office its sketchy at times. Friends from out of state who live here have never driven on snow before coming here. Breadth of experience in driving in snow is definitely an asset. I still get a kick out of jumping on the gas in a parking lot in a rear drive pickup with nothing in the bed. That's my standard way of checking how slippery it is... 1 Quote
Smirak Posted January 14 Posted January 14 I’m pretty sure my little town in NH had more snow treating/removal equipment than the entire state of Alabama 😂😂 Quote

My younger days i spent in snow covered parking lots screwing around. Really helped honestly. 1 Quote

wdp Posted January 14 Author Posted January 14 🤣 Boy this thread got off topic in a hurry. @Functional I like Jersey Mikes. And that Italian sub there is quite tasty to this ole untrained southern tongue of mine. 😂 But then, I’ve never had the pleasure of trying anything from something like a true New York style deli. Smirak Posted January 15 Posted January 15 Before we give all the love to New York style deli sammiches, let us not forget about a good ole Italian beef from Chicago. I literally ate my weight in them a year or so back when I was visiting for a couple weeks… 1 Quote

I had a pastrami on rye at a Jewish deli in NYC. It was tasty but there is nowhere that will let you pee in that city so I was intentionally dehydrated, then I ate that . Thought I was in the middle of the Sahara desert 1 Quote

I literally ate my weight in them a year or so back when I was visiting for a couple weeks… Growing up in the Chicago burbs, I really miss food. I have daily cravings for Portillos, gyros, shoot just a basic hotdog. Things foodwise just aren't the same here in NC. I like the bbq here but everything else doesn't compare. My wife thought I was crazy when we met but all that changed after her first visit to Chicago. Now, she craves it more rhan I do sometimes! Topic wise, I stand by the whole southerners can't drive thing and don't even start complaining about the humidity to me. Most don't understand that late July/August is super humid and temps are sometimes 100* (90s are normal) in the midwest. All in all, I wouldn't ever move back to Illinois, Wisconsin maybe. Quote
Functional Posted January 15 Posted January 15 @TnRiver46 Katz Deli? No where better in NYC than Katz for pastrami/corned beef sandwich. So famous they will actually ship their meats out now. From what I saw over Christmas everyone pees in the alleyways now.... @wdp for the options we have here I like Jersey Mikes. Doesnt compare to a NY deli but for a "fast food" deli its my usual go to here. @Smirak Never been to Chicago but I've heard good things about their food as well. I dont think I could get on board with their deep dish pizza though. Aside from a sicilian pie the Chicago deep dish is the complete opposite of a ny style slice. Quote

Don't get me wrong, it's delicious (I am a Giordanno guy), but true Chicago pizza is thin and crispy. I prefer mine to be cut into squares. Quote
wdp Posted January 15 Author Posted January 15 Alright, since we’re going full blown deli sandwich talk now. I ate at Mother’s in New Orleans a few yrs ago. We decided we had to go there after watching an episode of Man vs Food or some other show on Food Network. They have a roast beef sandwich called The Ferdi where they take all the drippings from slow cooking the roast beef & it’s got all those little pieces of meat & seasoning & tons of flavor, called the debris (pronounced day-bree). So the sammy is loaded with the meat & fixings on a po boy along with generous amounts of those day-bree drippings. Oh my gosh! What a wonderful sandwich!!! Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 15 Global Moderator Posted January 15 @Functional, unfortunately I have no idea, it was a long time ago Chicago? I had an Italian beef back in 1998 and it was heavenly Quote
