The line needs to be coiled the same as it is on the line spool.

Top of the line spool to top of the reel spool.

I typically use backing so I dont waste as much line.  Especially on deep spooled reels.  On a trip like you are going on.  I wouldnt do it.  Just fill the whole spool up.

Go to the BR home page and get to the "Tips and Tactics" section. Then under "equipment" go to "fishing line" and about midway down that page it explains how to properly spool them.

Muddy,I spool my baitcasters like Gman mentioned.I was just going to add that when Gavin(my little guy)isn't around to help,I just leave the spool in the box and hold it with my feet.Sounds silly but with the aid of a buddy or device it can be tough.Good Luck on Fork,Muddy!

heres a very easy way to spool your line. take a bass pro shops catalog and open it up in the middle, then lay your line in the crease and shut the catalog, then just spool your line on. it works, trust me!

Muddy, I use a spooler by the name of Eva Asburnink Groenstast. She is from Austria and easy on the eyes. She holds my line on a pencil while I spool up. I will send her up, but, do you think I can trust you while she is holding your pencil?  ;):o

This is how I do it.

I push a round thin pen through the label and hole in the spool.

I put the pen between my toes and press my feet together so the spool will spin but is snug.

with the line coming off of the top of the spool, I run it through the bottom rod guide.

Next I center the line guide on the reel and run the line through it and below the spool.

I tie a sort of arbour knot on the the spool and clip the tag end close to the spool.

I then cradle the rod about six inches in front of the reel and start turning the reel handle. I pinch the line between my thumb and forefinger and hold the line directly above the center line at all times. This puts the line on so it is fairly tight and balanced evenly on both sides of the spool.

I believe the feet add mojo.

It works too. Just wait till I take my shoes off at the fork. You'll see how the place empties right out.

OK Avid, I will send Eva down to you as well. I am sorry, she only has two hands so I can't get her to hold anyone else's pencil. Oh, and NO 5 lb bulk spools of line and  saltwater reels you want loaded with 4 lb test fellas.  ;)
