subwayrocket Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Need help please. Looking for spinning rods. Coming back to fishing after over 15 yrs away. Career, kids, life...etc ... Anyways, i fished the upper delaware, Deposit/Hancock NY and Cannonsville reservoir below my cabin from around 1977-2007 and most of the 90's jetting the Susquehanna Pittston to Wyalusing , before alotta jets on there . Anyways, I always preferred weightless feeling rods, stiff and with a stiff tip...and full cork handles ... Just pulled out my old favorite but i'm having a very hard time finding anything like it today . Wasn't an expensive, exotic rod . It's a Fenwick Graphite, 5'9" M (Medium?) says ES59 . I will attach some pics . To me, this rod feels nearly weightless and the tip is nice and stiff . I always ran either 6lb Trilene extra limp in the reservoir (no snags) or 6-8lb in the rivers (have spare spools) . I went looking for rods at cabelas ...no luck, so if i break this one im $crewd . Most of the rods i tried recently to me just seem too wobbly, slow recovery, too soft tip and/or too heavy and the handles are ugghh ! The closest thing to my old fenwick i found was a St Croix Premier 6'6" PS66MF2sg (the 6' version was nice too) . I bought the 6'6", nice rod but... i'm not a big fan of the handle, palm of my hand is resting on threads and overall it's a little heavier feeling . The handle on my old Fenwick is much nicer in the hand . I also have an old Berkley Pro Signature med-heavy "Wormin" PSB 27-6 im6 rod ....this to me is even closer in feel and action to the St Croix Premier i bought . Both these rods are probably 20 years old ... can't remember . I would love to find anything like them today...and i'm not brand loyal . I'm trying to find rods like this so i have spares. If i break this fenwick, not only am i out but i have nothing to campare to. Seems today reels are better and cheaper but rods...not so much. Last pic is my Berkley/Fen/StCrx . Unrelated but, I also have some Browning Medallion and Trophy Tamers for trolling the reservoir too. Thanks ! 2 Quote
little giant Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Welcome to the Forum! I can't help you with anything specific however you could browse the Falcon Rods website and see what the might have. You can call them if you have questions, they've always answered mine. Quote
BassinCNY Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I think the Fenwick Eagle walleye rods may be what you're looking for. The Lamiglas Hammer walleye rods have a similar handle too. I have one of those and it is a great all around rod but the cork came off the handle after a lot of use. 2 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted January 7 Super User Posted January 7 Welcome to the forum. Can't help with the rod. You can help me, tho. Many of us old geezers have bad eyes (personally was born with bad eyes). A paragraph now and then would sure be appreciated. Not many use short rods like that these days. Best of luck finding what you are looking for. I quit for 23 years. Got back into fishing in 2009. Was strictly a spinning guy previously. Tried a baitcast reel when I got back into fishing and never looked back. A word of warning. Beware of the Bait Monkey! his butt. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted January 8 Super User Posted January 8 Firstly, welcome to BassResource. I suggest checking out Abu Garcia rods. I have Veracity, Ike, and Villian spinning rods that have stiff tips. I was at BPS recently and handled a Veritas Tournament series that had the same action. Good luck picking out your rod(s). One is never enough. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 8 Super User Posted January 8 @subwayrocket Hello and Welcome to Bass Resource ~ I don't own this stick, but perhaps check out the Daiwa Kage B Spinning Rods You seem to be looking for very specific and somewhat uncommon blank characteristics. These might be of interest - although a little hard to find. Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 8 Super User Posted January 8 like a-jay, I don’t know either of these but both are hidden threads seats in shorter lengths with a full medium power. I like shimano spinning rods so that would be my start and for $70 hard to go wrong. https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Shimano_Convergence_D_Spinning_Rods/descpage-SCONS.html https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Lews_American_Hero_Spinning_Rods/descpage-AHSR.html 1 Quote
subwayrocket Posted January 8 Author Posted January 8 Hi A Jay . This characteristic wasn't very uncommon. As I said above, it was not an exotic rod, these were pretty common in the late '90s early 2000s. These were like $65 rods at the time. Fenwick eagle, pretty common rod then. Quote

I was at Cabela's but they didn't have much that I cared for there. Quote
MyKeyBe Posted January 8 Posted January 8 The Abu suggestion is pretty good. I have an older vendetta 6'6" and it has a fairly stiff tip. My lews hank parker casting rod has a fairly stiff tip as well. Not sure if the spinning rods are similar. Walmart could have both rods and may be on sale as well depending on your area. Check a few and see what you can find. Biggest problem might be the use of eva or winn type grips instead of cork. My vendetta has Eva and a metal lock ring as well but I don't think they still use the metal rings. Flea markets in my area seem to have a lot of the older Berkeley rods in the summer if you can find someone that has a fishing stand. Might be an option as well. 1 Quote

FrnkNsteen Posted January 8 Posted January 8 I have a soft spot for the old Fenwick rods. Hard to find something with full cork handles like that anymore. I feel the same way about rods that have the reel seat threads right where you hold the rod. You might try looking at the Cabela's Fish Eagle models at Bass Pro. I think they are still making them and they reminded me of the Fenwick Eagle rods when I have seen them before. Other options I have been using lately are Fenwick HMG, but they have changed the handles a few different times in recent years. Bass Pro also has St Croix EyeCon line of Walleye spinning rods that I kind of liked the feel when looking at them. Quote

No it wasn't uncommon. I have a couple berkleys in the garage from that period and one would fit what you want perfectly (6', ML, fast, stiff tip). But now its relatively uncommon. The trends have been to go longer, with exposed blank seats, and using light tips that get into power quickly. That's about the opposite of what you want. Finding 6'6" rods isn't too hard, but any shorter than that is getting tougher in a bass rod (hence the suggestions for multi species rods). good luck in your search. 1 1 Quote
