ArcForce Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I just bought my first nice setup, and I don't think I've ever been so excited to wet a line. I live on the east coast of Canada, so our fishing season is over in spring (aside from ice fishing if you're set up for that, which I'm not) Anyways, I just got my gear in the mail, and everyone I talk about my new setup to seems to be hating on the fact that I spent some money on it. Has anyone else experienced this? I just want to be able to be proud of what I bought and not have someone throw it in my face that they can catch as many fish on their $80 ugly stick combo. It took a lot or research, and I put a lot of thought into the combo before I bought it and I'm just getting **** on for it Quote
softwateronly Posted January 7 Posted January 7 Yes and No. For me, this whole experience/hobby became more enjoyable with better and better tailored gear. Super User bulldog1935 Posted January 7 Super User Posted January 7 I have friends who are Really well off, and frugal to a fault (scrimping for annual trip to France). They love borrowing my tackle fwiw, another friend spent his engineering career living on a sailboat in Bahamas and Aruba. He retired, sailed to Corpus, sold the boat, and runs a trailer park in fishing mecca Estes. Impossible to impress with gear, and that's ok, too. Don't let it skin your teeth... and yes, "I can catch more..." is tell-tale jealousy. 7 Quote

It's not for the fish and it's not for my buddies, although they are welcome to use my gear. Some people like to discuss gear, some people don't. Luckily we have this site A couple of years ago, I learned a hard lesson when a guy across the bank was catching non stop, I had a mid tier set up and he was hand lining (no rod, no reel). I stopped fishing and watched what he was doing, then spoke with him. Learned a lot that day. 5 Quote

I agree with this, I bought the rod for me, not other people and certainly not in an attempt to make anyone jealous. I was just surprised when the few guys I know that sport fish met me with the "that expensive gear won't make you a better fisherman" type of attitude. And its not like I needed the nice rod, I can catch fish. I just wanted a rod tailored to the types of bait I plan to throw this season. I would be happy to talk with someone about anything they were passionate about and at least pretend to share their enthusiasm or try and extract some information about something they've committed themselves to learning. That's the human experience in my eyes, when someone knows more than you about something.. shut up and listen if you can.. you might just learn something. And yes as a response to other people I did immediately see this as jealousy but with a kind of "gear shaming" attitude attached to it. Which was shocking to me. I find it ridiculous. It’s the same with any sport. Someone who doesn’t golf will question why a golfer needs a dozen clubs for 1 round of golf. And the casual golfer will wonder why an avid golfer needs a $1000 driver. So a casual fisherman or somebody who doesn’t fish at all looks at fishing as if it’s just sticking a worm on a hook tied to a stick, and can’t fathom anything beyond that, and then mock the people who are more into it than them. 5 Quote

Those who use low dollar rods/reels and those who use ultra expensive. Personally for me, let me repeat, personally for me, I have a performance based standard that once it’s met, I feel like I am not getting anything of performance value from my gear. I am a utilitarian. Others have different considerations both higher and lower than mine. Nobody’s right or wrong. I could afford anything I want but that doesn’t override my sense of personal value. It has to be noted that my performance standard requires a higher level of performance than a lot of anglers. 9 Quote
GReb Posted January 7 Posted January 7 I can almost guarantee you the same people that hate on you for splurging on fishing gear splurge on something else. Everyone has a hobby whether it’s electronics, video games, collectibles, cars, shoes, etc. The biggest culprits around here are hunters. They scoff at expensive boats and fishing rods etc and brag about their tin rig catching as many fish. But then drop $25k+ a year on a hunting lease with a $20k side by side, $3k rifle, Sitka camo, and Swarvski binoculars to kill 2 does and a 6 point. 6 6 Quote

People get way to caught up in gear, and not fishing these days. In my years of fishing ive came across many people, almost all were very friendly and nice people. Gave free lures, advice, and alot talked to me for awhile about fishing. These were mostly the older guys, not one person ever talked about their gear, or mine. Let alone bragged or insulted it. But the younger bass fisherman (my age) is another story, well the people my age are just terrible. Not just in fishing either. I wouldnt get worked up or let it bother you. Enjoy your new combo, and let them soak in their jealousy. When their plastic Ugly Stik reel breaks down and they ask to borrow yours let them use it, im betting they will go out and buy it the next day. Personally i only hate on the higher end gear thats useless. We live in a time where $200-300 rods and reels are the highest the ceiling goes. A rod or reel that costs $500 your only throwing money away. In my other hobbies i might spend $1200 on something i can get for $300. But the quality will be miles and miles away. Fishing gear however nowadays isnt the case, after that ceiling its just not worth it. Quote

My tackle is far from being as expensive as some on here have, but it's nicer than the few people I've fished with...except for the two bassresource members I've fished with. I don't catch near the numbers I did 60 plus years ago, but that has little to nothing to do with my rods/reels. I enjoy fishing with my $30 Procaster, but my $300 PXL Type R always brings a smile to my face. As MediumMouthBass pointed out, it isn't strangers that give me a hard time, it's relatives. Quote

Add up how much money in starbucks people waste yearly and most of us are probably ahead of the game. On the same hand someone could argue going out for the starbucks experience is their hobby. 🤷♂️ Bottom line, its your money, your hobby, do what you want as long as you arent putting yourself or family into dangerous debt. 1 Quote

It's definitely not the craziest rod in the world, but a massive step up from my 6' Medium Fast Ugly Stick Elite w/ abu garcia black max (which I still love for most things) Rod is a 7'2 MH Moderate fast action Fiberglass Shimano Poison Adrena Casting rod The reel is a DAIWA Tatula SV 8.1:1 which I've just realized when taking it out of the box, isn't what I intended to order. I wanted a 7.3:1 so I might have to send it back and get a lower gear ratio I'd welcome any of your opinions if you'd care to share your expertise on why this may or may not be the rod I want it to be for chatterbait fishing. I'm worried the tip may be a little too slow, and now very concerned that my reel may be too fast. I did my best research into the technique and this was the combo I came up with, and purchased based on the boxing day sales that were available to me Also apparently my pictures file sizes are too big to upload.. even 1 photo is over the limit 🤔 2 Quote
