I am somewhat new to all of this but would like to buy good equipment without over paying. I have read the reviews on this site and Shimano and Diawa seem to be the ticket. EBAY seems to sell close to new prices. Anyone have any thoughts as to where I can go on the net and get quality at a decent price. Thanks for the help.

Ebay is the way to go, Raul knows his Japanese reels, alot of times they seem to be at a better price than what the domestic reels go for.I set a price, bid on hundreds of reels until I finally get one for what I am willing to pay for it.Its a great winter project,in time , you will find some unexpected super deals, right now is income tax time, bad time to be trying to get a great deal. ;DIvan

If you are looking for a left handed baitcaster, there are two Shimano Curados for sale in the Flea Market right now.

$110 each, delivered.

Thanks for the help being new to this the carado's listed for 110.00 are only 9.00 less than new. I am sure they have been well treated however that does not seem like much of a saving. I know they do not make that model anymore does anyone think 110.00 is a good deal. Im still considering them I just want to make the right move.

It's all about supply and demand.  There are some "die hard" green Curado guys out there and I have no doubt those reels will sell.  I am almost one of those die hards, but I think I would spend the extra $10 and get a brand new Citica.  Basically the same reel with a few extras.

Hate to contradict you Castaway but Rosewalt, don't take the E-bay thing full bore in my opinion without some consideration. Do your homework. I've seen $80 reels go for $75 bucks plus $10 shipping when they could go local for less and KNOW what they are getting. Like they said don't try to win the auction try to get the reel for what you want to pay. Make sure that the shipping is listed don't let it be open ended. Make sure the seller sells a lot and has good feedback. I did all my homework and still almost got burned. Seller said brand new in box. When I got it the reel had scum under the spool lip ( like from being used), had line on it and had cuts from the line in the frame of the reel. Hadto fight but got my money back - return shipping. Probably 75% of the stuff goes for within $5 of what you can pick it up for. If you go for used same rules apply. Also know your exact model #'s well  an XYZ-FA might not be the same as an XYZ-FB etc.

I did buy 2 other reels via E-bay 1 new and 1 used and they were nice reels.

Like RW said flea market here is probably good people I'd make sure they have posts in addition to their selling post.

i buy from ebay exclusively.....the key is to buy from a person selling the item & not some big store mass listing stuff...some ebay stores are good deals but the majority of them jack up the shipping to break even....

example:

shimano symetre  retail $80-$90.......i paid $62 plus $6 shipping

daiwa viento         retail$199     .......i paid  $150 + $10 shipping

you can find deals, but your just not gonna get a gloomis rod for $10  or something crazy like that

I have to agree about ebay.  Sometimes people end up paying full price plus shipping and could have gotten the reel for the same price locally.  Here is a link to a site that I have found has some of the best prices on reels.  They also have free shipping on orders over $75.  I have not ordered from them personally, but I plan to do so in the future.

Illini, I guess I can agree with you to a certain extent.I never beleive that you can have a reel to sell thats new in the box, unless your buying from a place of business such as Bass pro shop, or something like that and then they could have been used lightly before being returned. ;)When I say I bid on hundreds of reels in order to get one at my price, I am not exaggerating one bit, I am a cheap Bass turd. If the item is as described, new in the box, I leave a feedback stating so. If it isn't, I also note it in the feedback,so the next buyer might take that in consideration .Know your reels, stick with your price, check feedbacks on the seller and bid wisely.I just traded 4 Tornos for a Shimano Mentanium XT reel. You might think I got the short end of the deal, but I bought the 4 Torno reels from Ebay.I had a total of $105.00 in the 4 reels.I bought a Daiwa CVZ 253 Millionaire reel NIB, which it was NIB for $71.00 , its very difficult to beat Ebay, if your willing to stick to your guns, bid on alot of items before you win a auction. The thing on the CVZ Millionaire, I had a proxy bid of $150.00 on it, but the auction fell way short of what I thought should have been a fair price.I absolutely love the reel, its found a home for life.   Ivan

I think we agree pretty well I'll pm you so as not to hi-jack the thread

I had the one bad experience with E-bay but did get the following decent deals

#1 Brand new Shimano Symetre still in the box $60.52 + $6 ship =$66.52

came new just like it said

retail would be $80 + tax = $88  if online add $8 ship = $96

#2 used Shimano Symetre older style Aero   $35 + $6 shipping

came used as advertised but in very nice condition

I took at glance at the site listed by doc, they looked to be cheaper on the Revo's by $20 but were $20 higher on a Symetre for instance.

Man I'm starting to talk like a posse member and I've only owned the Symetre reel for a few weeks. Must be voodoo fishing gear lol!  It's a cult all in its own!

;D You sound like that is a bad thing to be one od Road Warrior deputies. Taking the time to participate, helping each other out is what makes this site a great one.I will be the first to tell you, I know nothing about spinning gear, but I don't have to with people like you who spotted the price difference and know about spinning gear. In my first post, I mentioned Raul as being very knowledgable in the Japanese reel dept.He would be the one who knows about them to help save a few dollars by buying a Japanese version over a domestic version. The rod building crew seems to be as knowledgable on factory rods as they are custom rod building. That is basically why I am here, just learning alot of things I wouldn't have any where else. ;)Ivan
