@AlabamaSpothunter suggested I buy the following and I'm super excited to try them come spring. You fish them like an underwater walking bait that also dives:

I tried these this year, didn't ever really get it going in the summer, but come late fall it was super effective.  When they are active and chasing, great great lure.  I'm still playing with it in real cold water and think there's a 2-3 hop settle on the bottom type retrieve that I think/want to work.

I love being such a bad influence on you Katie, and the only thing I ask in return is some fresh Maine Bananas 🤣

Can't wait to hear you results, and one of the first things I thought of when I saw this bait was you.

@softwateronly  Beautiful fish, and great feedback!   You're always fishing the new sneaky ninja stuff 😎

I'm really glad you started this thread as it'll be interesting to see if others see the massive potential in this new bait/technique as I do.    Fishing has been really tough the last several weeks since buying these BR Fish, but I've still caught close to 20 fish on them.   Any day the fish will start schooling and blowing Shad up, and that's where I suspect this bait will truly shine.

ETA:  This bait can be rigged two ways that produce totally differently actions.   The 'winding' technique is what really fascinates me.

@AlabamaSpothunter thanks man and right back at ya!  I'm on an endless search to catch schoolies at the end of summer, because my daytime structure fishing just falls apart. And the monkey is my friend!

Is winding the flat side down, walk the dog, version?  That's what got me as well.  Super unique.  I definitely have done best toward the lighter end of the spectrum, and have kinda settled on the 7g as my main option.  Seems like a good compromise for casting distance and glide distance.  Now that I finally had some sustained success and more confidence, I'm hoping I can unlock the retrieve speed for the summer fish.  I have also noticed my casts tumble quite a bit, inducing line twist. Just something to monitor.  Another note, there's 4" & 5" baits available now too.

Yeah Scott, I'm just using it for the 'winding' action with the flat side down rigging.

I too share your thought process behind this bait, it should be dynamite for schooling or active fish.     The speed at which you have to work it kind of rules it out for negative or neutral fish in the cold-water months, but I suspect it will still be effective for those same Bass to some degree in warmer water temps.

I've only fished the 3/16th heads thus far, and that's what I expect will be the correct size for schooling fish in the first 5-10ft of the water column.      I've got the 5/16ths for deeper fish, and maybe I'll play around with the 1/2oz as well.

I need to grab some 4" models as that's my preferred minnow size in general.    I bet Katie will like the 5" models though since she has so much success on the 5" Sakamata Shads IIrc.

Really interesting. So you wind and move the rod tip up and down to get it to walk. I wonder how hard it is to get the hang of. Anyone tried it?

You got it pal, it's really simple to make the bait dance side to side by just popping your rod up and down while reeling in the slack on each pop.   I haven't tried jerking it to the side very much, but in some videos I see some doing it that way as well.

It's one of those baits that looks so tantalizing in the water that it gives you confidence, one of those baits you say no way this thing doesn't get destroyed.

Some folks rig the swimbait less than perfect on the hook because they said it yields an even more erratic motion, but I haven't tried that yet.

Rule of thumb with them is lighter head, better drift.  I love them up here for post spawn fish

I have some.  and I suck at them.  zero bites, and my waters are too cloudy to tell if I am even working them correctly.  next spring when I get to a gin clear lake, I will fling one out again.  I truly dont know what I happening at the end of the line except that no fish is interested.

@Darth-Baiter  My viz is like 3-4ft so I'm not in real clear water, nor am I in real dirty water.

I'd say if somebody can fish a fluke, jerkbait, or jighead minnow and catch fish, then those same fish will at least see the BR Fish.

Hmm. They are slender lures and the tiny tail won't produce much thump, meaning they won't feel it in their lateral line. Maybe your water is too murky for such a slight bait. I fish clear water and would be very surprised if they don't work. That side to side jerking is a Five Guys Burgers and Fries to Maine bass.

Why didn't someone post about these 6 months ago? I really could have used something like this for the clear summer river conditions. Guess I will just add another $25 worth of these jigheads to the ever-growing bill of jigheads I have bought lately.

So like a baitmonkey victim, I clicked on the link for the BayRUF, but couldn’t figure out whether the quantity is for one or for one pack and if the latter, how many in a pack?

I looked at other soft plastics and saw the quantity per bag but not on these.

Thanks ahead of time for letting me know.

DANG IT EVERYONE.
Now I want some too.
Have the perfect place to try them, crystal clear and spring feed river(72* year round), see big ones laying in the eel grass. They simply refuse to bite, maybe this will change their minds.

Sorry to intrude on this conversation but curiosity has gotten the best of me.

@AlabamaSpothunter are you working this the same as say a jerkbait or quicker like a walk the dog type lure (spook)?

Would you say that the soft plastic is creating the gliding action?

EDIT: My apologies, I got a phone call while I was reading this thread, when I came back I jumped over the plastic rigging options. I think the aging process is catching up to me (don’t judge me) :)

I ask because the jig head doesn’t look like anything out of the ordinary as far as a horizontal swimming jig at least from the pics that I see @Swamp Girl posted. In fact very similar to the ultra minnow heads I use for bucktail jigs

image.png.8b98eb0b93b5106caf53bd06120f9d1c.png
Line tie on top of the jig head and centered in the weight which should/will produce a horizontal presentation in the water. Right? Now it’s the gliding action nut to crack?

This is really interesting :)

I have caught fish in chocolate milk on minnows.  Bass don't stop eating little minnows when the water gets muddy.

I actually do well shaking them just beneath the surface dirt shallow on small ponds - oddly enough - poorer visibility almost always = more bites on any artificial lure at these particular small bodies of water.

These look fun.  I shake minnows on weedless ned heads and have a lot more confidence in the bait being able to come through the tops of brush etc - works great.

I'll get back at it soon.  how do you know how deep the bait is running?  and more importantly, are the hits violent?  I imagine a bass trying to kill a flee bait is violent.

If your talking about the jigheads, it depends on the size as for the quantity, but the price is for a pack.

I fish it more like a jighead minnow than a jerkbait.      I just jerk the rod up from about 60degrees to 90degrees while reeling in the slack.    Very much like strolling a minnow, but with a harder, and more exaggerated up and down motion.   Hope that makes sense.   The actual cadence underwater is every bit as fast as if you're working a spook, except I'll pause a spook but with the BR Fish you don't ever pause.   Just a steady walk the dog action.

My understanding is the actual jighead design is the reason this bait has such unique action.    I'm not sure if that's solely because of the gliding fins on the sides or maybe the shape of the head.     In time I plan to experiment with non BR fish plastics to see if I can get the same action but with different plastics.
