Hey everyone, I just got my first rod designated for frog fishing (Dobyns Fury Frogging Rod) and im looking for a reel to pair with it, i am currently deciding between a 13 Fishing Concept A2, Curado 200 DC, Diawa Tatula SV TW, and possibly a Lews BB1. I have frog fished alot and i usually use a reel with a large amount of drag (20+) but im wondering how nevessary that is.

i plan to run 50 pound braid on the setup

I know that an aluminum frame and a high gear ratio/drag are important aswell as a larger spool size but im not sure which reel is the best choice.

any advice is greatly appreciated

Tranx 150 is a great frog reel. It's got a touch more drag than the curados (I want to say 14lbs) and is still pretty light with enough capacity for 50lb braid and frogs

The BB1 Pro is a very underrated reel, as most people skip over it because its a Lews.... And Lews isnt a Daiwa or Shimano etc, but its a phenomenal reel.

Meant for crankbaits but it can also do frogging and under 3oz swimbaits too.

It is made to cast deep diving cranks far, and hold up to the wear and tear that the crankbaits drag causes while coming back.

If casting far is something you would like this would be the reel.

Tatula 150, Tatula 100, and Fugeo CT are my other reccomendations.

More so heavy duty than nice looking finishes compared to the other Tatula line (Fuego is a Tatula minus the T wing). I have a Tatula SV TW 103 and a few Tatula CT's, i dont think they would hold up for frog fishing....

The new 23 tatula 100 is highly underrated imo, it was upgraded with the hyper drive gearset, side plate, lighter spool, better ergos last year. I haven’t used the other reels listed but I’d take it over the SVTW in a heartbeat. I’ve been using it for frogging, punching, and c-rigging and it’s been super solid so far, and can be had for under $120 if budget is a concern.

Not to highjack this post, but how do you like that 23 Tat 100 for other techniques? Or does it really only shine for more heavy duty applications?

Can't offer an opinion on the 4 reels you mentioned, but wanted to welcome you to the forum.  Lots of great reading from many knowledgeable people.  Enjoy.

Many have their preference, so that will be their recommendation.  Up to you to do the needed research before deciding on 'your' preference.  I'm something of a reel fanatic so it's hard for me to find a reel I don't like.  :)

I'm a guy that doesn't notice the little things.  I have an original Concept A.  First time I mounted it on a rod I was amazed at how well it felt.  A first for me.  It did take more time than usual to dial in.  No experience with the A2.  I'd skip the SV reel if looking for maximum distance.  That's all the help I can offer.

Surprisingly good compared to the previous gen. Last outing I was swimming the smaller speed worm T rigged with 3/16 weight and had no issues with distance, the new spool helps a lot (I believe it inherited the tat elites spool), excellent for pitching too but haven’t skipped with it as I use the alphas sv for that.

this is my frog reel, an Ambassadeur 4500c3. it is a winch. little heavier than some other reels but it balances well with the rod I have it on.

Not sure I'd go with the Curado DC. Nothing against that reel but it seems like it's a little overkill and my frog of choice (swamp lord) is already 2/3oz so don't know that there'd be much benefit to paying for the digital control on a frog rod.

Also really like the Tatula SV TW in general, but if I was getting a Daiwa for frogging it would probably be the Tatula 200 (or 150).

That leaves the Concept A2 and BB1. The BB1 is more expensive and you are going to get what you pay for, both good brands and either one would pair up well w/ that rod for frogging...if it were me I'd probably go with the Concept A2 since it's on sale at the moment and seems like it would be more than enough to get the job done.

Question, has anybody actually here broken a reel frog fishing? We all put labels on what’s good and what’s not for heavy cover but haven’t seen it any failures of lighter more compact reels. Sure. I like the bantam but my jdm zillion that’s almost two ounces lighter drags them in left and right without complaining….

my frog reel is a Tatula SVTW (TWSV? - I forget)

its fine.  I'm usually not long range casting my frogs for the most part.  same 50lb line.  no issues.
