Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 OK, the Shimano posse is running rampant around here ... and with good reason as Shimano makes some REALLY good stuff. I definitely do love my Curado 101D. But as anyone here knows, just 1 good baitcaster is simply not enough. With that in mind, the monkey 'persuaded' me to pick up a Revo STX-L and St Croix AC66MF this weekend. B-E-A-U-T-I-F-U-L. Um, wow... I thought my 101D balanced well with the Kistler MG APC, but the Revo/Avid feels just as good, if not better. Yeah, that's not indicative of the actual reel performance but it sure doesn't hurt. Went to the lake yesterday with the intention of throwing traps just to see how it felt on the cast and retrieve (and pretty much acknowledging that I had little chance to catch a thing with a bait moving that fast). Casting 1/2 oz traps...a country mile. 1/4 oz traps...a country mile. Strong, silent and smooth on the retrieve. Not a birdsnest on the day. No fish to show for it, but I had such a grin on my face that I'm not sure I would have stopped cranking long enough to set a hook So with that said, Abu Garcia now has a posse of its own. Yeah, that's right. I said it P.S. And the best part was the wife saw the charge on the Amex website this morning, asked if it was a new rod/reel and concluded with 'OK, I was just checking to make sure the charge was legit'. NICE. Super User roadwarrior Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 High Noon at the OK Corral, be there or be square! Congrats on your new gear, it sounds great! Quote
deadeye32. Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I too love my curado's and have been using shimano's for years, but I bought a revo this weekend and absolutely love it. I bought the revo s for under a hundred bucks and cant wait to really play with it this spring. I messed around a little bit at home and love how smooth the drag is and how small/light it is. posse might be growing Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 5, 2007 Super User Posted February 5, 2007 For many years Abu was THE reel, then, suddenly around 1987-88 they began manufacturing pretty lousy reels, they switched from aluminum frame to graphite frame, graphite sideplates, lots of plastic, less quality while keeping the price, let 's hope for you guys buying their new Revo line that they really worked out trying to gain again the position it had. Me ? no longer will purchase any Abu reel, Shimano and Daiwa have better stuff now. And yes, I do own Abu reels, that 's why I say that they fell face down from the ugly tree. Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 5, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 5, 2007 And yes, I do own Abu reels, that 's why I say that they fell face down from the ugly tree. You think the Revo's are ugly? I think they're d**n sexy Quote
justtrying Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 i fish nothing but high end shimano reels now. ...because i'm old, i can afford it & i enjoy using them. for over 25 years, however, i fished abu reels. after i got my first 4600, it was the only kind of reel i wanted. i'm looking at thousands of dollars worth of shimano reels as i type this. BUT, there will always be a special place in my heart for abu garcia reels. ronnie Quote
.Paxamus. Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I just love my big ol' 5600's. I have got one that might even be 15 years old, but been rebuilt a couple of times!! Even lookin into a couple of their sexy low profiles! Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 5, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 5, 2007 Nice... Now if Abu would just make an STX-L-HS Quote
castaway Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 Congrats on the new outfit. I love my Revo S, but in all honesty, I think the Metanium XT may be the nicest reel I have.I had to trade 4 tornos to get it, but I still have the Revo S,a Torno 3006HSI,4600c4, CS3500 I.A.R. Rocket, Tournament Pro TP3000c, 5600 black Max for abu Garcia reels.I still have more Daiwas than anything, but I am going to hunt a few more Shimanos down for good measure. ;)Ivan Quote
TournyFish001 Posted February 5, 2007 Posted February 5, 2007 I'd put my shimano scorpion 1001 mg up against it anytime... I have a bit invested in it but no more than the Revo STX. I hope the revo's are good- nothing wrong with a little competition. I like shimano for baitcasters and daiwa for spinning gear. Don't see myself going for abu anytime soon... Quote
Super User cart7t Posted February 6, 2007 Super User Posted February 6, 2007 I'm still using a 4600C3, a pair of one of the finest reels ever, the Ultra Mag XL plus along with a trio of 2005LP's. I've still got an old Red 5000 that I got for a 16th birthday present 33 years ago that I could still use if I wanted. I've bought into about 6 BPS reels this year to try them out. Still a Garcia guy and will probably switch to Revo's when the used market starts to open up. Quote
Super User Alpster Posted February 6, 2007 Super User Posted February 6, 2007 I am also a pretty hard core member of the Shimano Posse, but I have 3 ABUs that I am not ready to part with. I have an old red 6000 that I just rebuilt (catfishing reel), a 5600WS and 6600D5, so I don't mind fishing with the Garcia posse. Ronnie Quote
ARfishermen08 Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I bought a revo stx and its the best garcia reel yet. I have a few older round reels, a shimano citica, and a pfleuger president and supreme and i like the revo the best by A LONG SHOT. Quote
Super User flechero Posted February 6, 2007 Super User Posted February 6, 2007 Until this past year, I would have been the Roadwarrior equivalent in the Abu Posse, I might have qualified as the sherrif or at least a high ranking deputy. ...lol I still own more Abu reels than Shimano but the usage edge goes to Shimano... purely a credit to the 50 MG's weight. IMO the Revo line is a hit and will prove to be an incredible series of reels. It will take a few years to prove that but we have time. ...lol I'd put my shimano scorpion 1001 mg up against it anytime... I have a bit invested in it but no more than the Revo STX I'd like to tie them together on a 100 yds of braid and just see who how fast the scorpion gets stung. ...lol The scorpion is lighter and maybe a little smoother but that's all... the revo would beat it up in short order. All in good clean fun, this was an Abu thread! ;D Quote
justfishin Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Sign me up for the Abu posse, I still love those old school C3 5601's of mine. They have served and continue to serve me well. Quote
Bluecraw Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 Sign me up! This year I will never hit the water with less than 5 Revo SXs on board.....almost have enough reward points to get another one. Quote
Super User Catt Posted February 6, 2007 Super User Posted February 6, 2007 C3's old school! Now that's funny right there I got a 5000 that's 30 year old; it's mounted on a Heddon fiberglass rod with a cast aluminum handle. Won many a tournament with it, wouldn't sell it for $1,000 but wouldn't fish with it again Quote
justfishin Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I guess you are right Catt. The old red 5000's are the true old school reels. Were they great or what? I guess you could say they were the " Catts A** " !!!,lol. Quote
KYbass1276 Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I liked using the garcia's but I made the switch last year to shimano and I don't think I can go back. I have thought about buying a revo but I just can't break away from shimano. Maybe in a couple of years after they have been out a little longer I might go back. I have to say they look nice and I still might get one sooner I haven't seen a bad comment on them yet. Quote
Bass Pro Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I love my Shimano's, but $$ for $$ the Revo wins hands down. There is NOTHING in the STX price range that can come even remotely close to going cast for cast with it. There is nothing in a low-profile that even comes close to the drag output of the Revo's. I couldn't believe how smooth and powerful the STX is until I got my first one. Now I have another one on order! ;D Quote
Super User MALTESE FALCON Posted February 6, 2007 Super User Posted February 6, 2007 Sign me up. I use Abu Garcia exclusively. I have a 24 year old C3 that works like new, 2 C4's, A C5 mag-x, a D5, and a Record RCN40. I have big hands, so I like the round reels better. I may have to look at the Revo and add a low profile to my arsenal. Falcon Quote
skillet Posted February 6, 2007 Posted February 6, 2007 I posted something about this a while ago but hopefully some of you didn't see it. Have had a Garcia Ultra Mag 1 since it was new (1982) and Reel Mech just cleaned and polished everything. It's working as well if not better than ever! With the gear ratio, it's slower than molasses in Jan. compared to my new Citica. But giving it credit, it's older than some of the folks that are posting on here. I'm hoping it and me are around for another 25 or so years. Maybe some of us can ride for each one depending on who is out.... As Ever, Skillet Quote
Rattlinrogue Posted February 7, 2007 Posted February 7, 2007 I use Abu Garcias and Quantums.I have 10 Abus and really love 'em.I've been using them since 1980.I'm going to buy a few Revos, but at present I'm using 5000's,5500's and a couple of 6000's.The 5500 is my favorite reel, and one in particular has hauled in much more than its share of lunker bass. It's only 15 years old,No problems with it.Add me to the posse.
