My girlfriend loves her Bass Pro Shops Pro Qualifier bait cast reels, but will get frustrated in wind with birds nest. I figured if I switched out the spool for a shallow spool it would be easier for her to fish. Never switched out a spool before so how do I know what size to get? Or will any fit? Thanks for the help

That might be tough to find one for that reel since its a house brand reel.

But since its a Doyo made reel (company that makes BPS/Lews reels), then maybe one of the Lews aftermarket shallow spool reels will fit, but its not a guarantee.

If its only happening in wind adjust the braking system to be a bit higher when wind starts.

Casting distance will be reduced (so will a reel with a shallow spool), but birds nest will be reduced too.

That'll be a tall order. Even if you could find one, I am not certain it'll make it less prone to backlash. With lighter spool weight, casting normally requires a little larger brake force, otherwise it'll actually be easier to backlash, especially for heavy lures.

To battle backlash without choking the casting distance much, you could get her either a Shimano DC reel or any Daiwa reel with a SV spool. These are almost backlash proof, almost. DC reels are "high" tech yet expensive, but SV reels have some quite affordable options, like the Daiwa Fuego SV under $100.

There are now a few offering shallow-spool fit for Lew's SLP, but you find so much variance in spindles, spool diameter and bearings between different brands and models made at Doyo, you're unlikely to find one.

If you can identify a Revo model that swaps spools with your reel, that would improve your chances of finding a match on Express website.

This is what sent me five years ago to my first Daiwa since 1978.

I did buy a Doyo-built ZPI Alcance for the matching 7-g spool (Mg + Ti), and fish this reel in freshwater BFS, but these spools won't fit any of the Lew's I tried.

I'm going to add that lower spinning mass (inertia) needs less brake, not more.

Casting lighter needs more mag brake to prevent mid-cast (wind) backlash, but casting light weight on light spool, you almost never need start-up brake.

The easiest answer is a spinning rod where conditions make casting troublesome.

Agree.  But my B-I-L doesn't understand why I am willing to put up with the occasional backlashes.  He uses spinning only.  I've only used bastcast when fishing with him.  Well up until the last time I visited when I forgot to bring a baitcast reel with braid.  It just so happened that I had shipped a spinning rod down along with a couple baitcast rods and the spinning reel I brought with me had 30# braid on it.

Was depressed not to be able to use a casting rod for fishing in the lily pads but must admit the spinning rod worked well even though it was an older Fenwick Elite Tech MF jig and worm rod.

You can put 60 lb braid as backup filler, tape over with a layer of Teflon plungers pipe seal tape and add 75 yards of 30 braid or mono top shot. This reduces spool weight and backlash depth.

Or….retire the reel and replace it with Shimano 2024 SLX 70 A.

I have a few of the newer PQ reels. It has dual brakes. Best to have 2 centrifugal breaks on or 3 if windy and add a little mag breaks.

No need for a SV type spool on them.
