Purchased a Dobyns Champion 735c last night for frogging. I am now looking for a reel to go with it. Stayed up way too late last night reading through forums and watching videos haha. I recently stumbled across Curado 200e7 and am interested. Seems like a workhorse and saw people mentioned its ease of use. I’ve actually never used a bait caster but after 33 years I am ready to learn. I actually bought two older Shimano stradic FL that were lightly used on eBay after reading about them here and I am really happy with them. With that being said I am open to input on how this reel would work with my new frogging rod.

I have a couple of Curado 200E7s. Great reels. I need to get them serviced & cleaned so I can use em again.

These should work fine for frogging. My main 2 uses with these reels were casting weightless swimming frogs & burning lipless crankbaits.

Totally solid reels, should be great for not only frogs but Trigs, and Jigs.

That was my opinion as well until the Curado 150 mgl came out.  The 200e7 is a workhorse.  Unless you could find one sub $150...closer to $100...now days I would look at the newer tech.  I see a lot of them pop up on ebay for around $200.  Could not justify $200 considering what you can get for that money now days.  Not even a comparison.

this is where I am.  I have the chronarch equivalent downstairs.  I'm going to use it because it works.  But considering you can get a brand new Curado K 200 for $150 there is no way I'd buy a used one unless it was $100 or less.

I also don't think you need a 200 size for frogs.  That's 50-65lb braid territory and you can get plenty of braid on a 150 sized reel for frogs.  And the 150 sized reels are just a little better in feel for me and more versatile if you change it to a lighter bait lure later.  That said, if the 200 size fits you and you get a deal on one, then no reason not to.

The reason people are asking $200 for them is because thats what people pay for  one in good condition even when they could have “newer tech”

The E has almost a cult like following

I still have a couple 200Ds that I use for 1-3 oz swimbaits. It’s almost the same reel. It is a great, failsafe platform. Absolute tanks.

The Shimano 200-201E7 reel I believe was the last Curado made in Japan, was much smaller than the previous D variant and held its value over the years. Great little reel.

Still one of the most ergonomic reels ever made.  I have a Curado & Chronarch 200E7 along w/ a Citica 200E..........

Send them my way at your convenience and I’ll fix em up

Which is exactly my point.  They were (still are) amazing reels.  Hell, I still have a 301e and I love it.  For $100 or so used the 200e would be a choice reel even by todays standards.  But to pay $200 for one when you can get a 150 mgl for nearly the same price that is better in literally every way, it just does not make sense.  People are paying for nostalgia in this case.

Agreed. The rub is that they have a cult following and go for more than I paid new on clearance. Personally, I don’t see the “latest tech” having all that much value over the e7. Biggest advantage would be longer parts availability of new models. One could argue that even so, the E is less likely to need parts over time. It’s your call.

I’m not sure about that because to be honest, I’m not completely sure about micro module gearing yet. I updated this past spring but just don’t have enough hours on my Metaniums or my Bantam A reels to know for sure.

But I’m betting @Delaware Valley Tackle would know.

Respectfully Disagree that what you referenced is better in every way.

Nostalgia is in the eye of the beholder

The reels Value is in my hand.

Thanks for the input everyone. I did see the prices on eBay which seemed high. I also noticed that all the live bid ones ended up selling closer to the 100 dollar range. I feel like 200 is a little steep for some of the used ones I saw. I’ll keep an eye out for some that come up for bid as opposed to but it now. Cult following yes but it seems like no one has anything bad to say about it aside from price. I’ll look into some of the other mentioned reels.

My personal GOAT reel. Not the fanciest thing ever, but for me they just have a certain mojo. Set it and forget it, no worries reel. I have several E series in multiple sizes and still prefer them to this day over any other CU Shimano has put out.

Of course I can’t find a left handed

If looking on ebay, it will take awhile to find a lefty, especially if looking for near mint quality.  Just have to keep checking everyday.  There is a 6:1 51e on there now that looks good for $175, but sounds like you are after a 201e7.

Is your question if new reels are “better in every way”? If so, I don’t think it’s that cut and dried.

Are you searching "201" or "200". 201 is a lefty.

Curado 201E with 60# braid is what I had on my frog rod.  Will put it on my next frog rod.  Previous rod as stolen.

I was at the local bait shops spring expo and swap last spring and a guy had a box of old Curado  B's and E's he was selling. He had three 201 E7's he was selling for $75 a piece.

I had never used a Curado E so I bought one. I put it on a Megabass Levante Diablo Spec for spinnerbaits and I really like it! Good reels. I see why everyone likes them. I wish I would have bought more. That being said, I wouldn't pay $150 - $200 for them though. Though I DID see the 51e someone mentioned above. Thought about it, but wasn't bidding on it when already at $179.

I was searching 200. I’ll start looking for the 201. Appreciate that info!
