Lottabass Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I have some Rapala Rocco's with round lips and they don't deflect like a bait (pictured) with a squarebill, that is my experiance anyway. Or am I fishing them wrong? 1 Quote
Kev-mo Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Seems to me the rounded bill would tend to skitter/slide along whatever it hit v. the points/coffin sides bouncing off the same object. 1 Quote
Lottabass Posted December 7, 2024 Author Posted December 7, 2024 Yes, I could not fish the rounded bill ones without getting hung constantly! Quote
GReb Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Square bill helps deflect. Try a Frittside 5 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 A crank with a round or coffin bill will turn on its side when hitting an object. This exposes the hooks to whatever the object is as the crank passes over it. Snags happen if you continue to reel after the bait's bill contacts the potential snag. If you aren't experienced enough to tell when your bait is approaching a possible snag, you need quick reflexes to stop reeling so the crank can right itself and float up before continuing your retrieve. There are few square bills that will dive very deep, so a coffin bill is your next best bill shape, but they, too don't run very deep. A round or egg shaped bill, like most mid to deep diving cranks have is best suited for deeper water and learning how to avoid snags while still initiating contact with them, is something to learn. IMO, carry a good lure retriever while learning and keep it handy because even the best crankers get snagged. 4 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 I find 6th Sense crankbaits deflect off "cover" better than other crankbaits. My #1 is the Movement 80X. 3 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I've had a lot of success during the colder months on the frittside! It almost suspends so you can pause it a lot without it instantly floating up and that plus it's ability to deflect pretty darn well and it's silent nature make it pretty great! 3 Quote
Lottabass Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 Thank you, Pat! The Bait Monkey will be happy! Frittside will be on my next order. 1 Quote
Lottabass Posted December 8, 2024 Author Posted December 8, 2024 @papajoe222 I think my problem is that I've been fishing the round bills the same way I fish the square bills. I can speed grind the square bills through cover and you can't do that with a round bill. Thank you for your help! 1 Quote

Called it "worming a crankbait " which is where you finesse crank it through cover without banging into everything like a square bill. Allen 1 Quote
