Recently, I got into throwing 6 in swimbaits and a-rig on a 7ft XXH rod.

I’ve been preferring 20# copoly or Flouro over 30# braid with leader.

I know the braid cast further and I have less risk of line breaking from bird nest but for me, braid will bird nest once and become a nightmare. The line starts to dig into itself and I get a ton of break off on cast from Braid getting stuck. I think I spool the braid correctly. I put a ton of tension on the braid when spooling up.

For my heavy casting lures I’m choosing not to use braid. I feel better about casting a copoly line harder too since I won’t have this braid line getting stuck in spool problem.

Anyone else run into this situation?

I've not had braid breaking from a birds nest.  Believe me.  I can bird nest any reel.  I did cast a 1/2 oz. jig have way across the lake when 30# braid got wrapped around the rod tip and I didn't notice it.  This was on a MHF spinning rod.

My first braid was 40# because that was the lightest suggested at that time for use on a baitcast reel.  Now some use way lighter than that nowadays.  Purchased a used reel with 30# braid spooled on it.  Spent first 10-20 minutes I used it casting, removing a tight spot, and repeating.  No problems after that.

However, I don't cast 6 inch swimbaits.  My personal opinion is go heavier if you want to use braid.  Too much chance for the line to dig in with that combo IMO.  Should I ever start using big swimbaits my choice of line would be like yours...20-25# mono or co-polymer.  Less chance of a breakoff.  I'd about pass out spending that much on a lure.  Breaking one off would have me crying a river of tears.

I have cast off many a lure over the years with braid 40lb and under, but never on my 50lb or 65lb set ups.  If you're happy with the move to copoly/floro I think you should stick it out.  If you want to go back to braid I suggest upping your braid diameter to eliminate the braid cutting itself.

I like 15-20 YZH Or 65lb braid to a long leader

It makes sense to up the braid size.

I thought my casting set up would be similar to a jig set up. Interesting to know folks up size to something more like 50/56 pound.

I have 20# YZH on now.
Might try heavy braid if I get issues with the YZH line.
