ike8120 Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I am thinking about changing all my spinning tackle to braid with a FC leader. Can go with a thin dia braid 20-30# with 12-15# leader. Any thoughts. Quote
Super User Scott F Posted December 6, 2024 Super User Posted December 6, 2024 I use 10lb braid on all my spinning gear. Its thin diameter gives me maximum casting distance and also lets lures run deeper than thicker lines. It’s also very strong but not so strong that it’s too difficult to break when you get snagged. For my fishing, 10lb is strong enough for anything I’m going to throw using a spinning rod. If heavier lines are needed for getting through thick weeds, I switch to my bait casting gear. Anything thinner than 10lb braid is more difficult to tie especially if you want to tie on a leader. 6 Quote
Super User Solution Jig Man Posted December 6, 2024 Super User Solution Posted December 6, 2024 I use 15# with various leaders. 4 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 6, 2024 Super User Posted December 6, 2024 I have been using a lot of YGK Xbraid #0.8 to #1.2 PE. I like Ohdragon, Upgrade and if you want crazy expensive, there is Shinji. I bought a spool of #0.8 with an Amazon gift card I got from work. I have it on a 2000 Twin Power. I would never buy it outright. Fantastic line though and the best I have ever used. Ohdragon is sinking braid. This great for bottom contact baits. Upgrade is your get it done braid. Nothing fancy but good line. I use 10 or 12lb leader. I like Seaguar Gold Label and Seaguar Grand Max. I also use Daiwa Saltiga. Another line to look at is Sunline Almight. I have only used it on BFS gear but so far it casts great and holds up well. 4 Quote
VTFan Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 For years I would not touch a spinning outfit due to wind knots when using mono or fluro. Then I decided what the heck and gave braid a try on spinning and I love it!! Currently I have 30# Power Pro braid with a...either 17 or 20# fluro leader and before next season I plan to switch to 15# fluro leader. With this setup I fish mainly wacky's. 1 Quote
padlin Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I use 12 on my Med gear and 20 on the MH for heavy weeds. A leader depends on if I’m fishing in Pickerel waters, I have 12 and 20 lb, none if not. Quote
Hulkster Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I tried braid on spinning gear and hated it because i was getting wind knots. so I just use a good quality limp mono like Sufix Siege or Elite. Casts long smooth and strong. no wind knots, little memory. 3 Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted December 7, 2024 Super User Posted December 7, 2024 I use 4#, 6# and 10# mainline braid on the 4 spinning reels I carry in my boat. Diameter and composition of leaders (if used) depends on abrasion protection wanted, lure drop speed wanted or lure retrieve depth wanted. oe 1 Quote
Smirak Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I may be a minority. I run Flouro on my UL (4-6#), 10# on my jerk bait rod and then 10# braid on my “other” spinning set up. Everything else, I run braid on, almost braid exclusively. Rarely run a leader. Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted December 7, 2024 Super User Posted December 7, 2024 Well I use Yozuri Hybrid in 6 or CXX in 6 I like spinning and use it fairly often but my favorite is power fishing w heavy rods and Trigs and Jigs. Put me in 5 acres of hydrilla and I’m loving it. I know our Florida boys understand and I know Catt understands also.. I’m not sure if WRB ever fished any kind of heavy vegetation but no matter, we all exploit our personal little environments and do what we do.. I don’t use braid though I understand its appeal. I guess it’s one of the reasons this board is so very interesting reading everyone’s adventures from the far north to the Deep South and thanks to WRB we get to learn about western bass fishing. It’s interesting for a myriad of reasons. Today is Pearl Harbor day. 83 years ago. Kinda hard to believe it’s been 83 years now. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 7, 2024 Super User Posted December 7, 2024 I am not as skilled fishing heavy over as those members who fish vegetation every outing. I did learn to bass fishing using a Hawaiian Wiggler #3 weedless spoon fishing massive weed beds with some open pockets. Also had a Bill Plumber weedless frog to fish weed beds. Clear Lake and the Delta have large areas with heavy cover using weedless jigs, so yes I know how to fish cover. The morality of finesse fishing is in deep rocky sparse cover local lakes where spinning tackle with 5# Maxima UG copoly line works good for decades, strong small dia line. Don Iovino turned me onto 5 # UG in the 80’s. Tom PS remember Pearl Harbor and fly your🇺🇸 2 Quote
Super User F14A-B Posted December 7, 2024 Super User Posted December 7, 2024 I remember that Bill Plummer frog, coolest frog ever invented for the time.. hookups were tough as I recall but I was a young fisherman and soon learned I had to hand sharpen that hook.. still it was a blast to fish. 1 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted December 7, 2024 Super User Posted December 7, 2024 If you think you really need 20 pound braid, go with premium braid, 8-12 strands in order to get good casting performance. Those using 10 pound braid know what I mean. The lighter stuff casts so much better than most 20 pound braids, but the premiums do very well. Look at line diameters, and don't go over about .006 for best casting performance. I use from 10-15 pound braid most of the time, and with premium FC leaders of up to 15 pound test to avoid the fragility of some of the lighter stuff. Use one of the smaller knots like FG or Alberto when using the leaders of about 15 and above. 1 Quote

Once I removed maybe a sixteenth to an eighth of an inch of line it pretty much solved the problem. I still occasionally get a wind knot but it's rare and most of the time when I do I just make sure the knot is wet and pull on it and it...un-knots itself. JMHO 2 Quote

With braids I don't pay much attention to the diameters, as how tightly it is woven and whether or not it is coated will have an affect on diameter without affecting the strength. oe Quote

KP Duty Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I still love my spinning rods. I can skip and jig baits more effectively with them. I have a bfs rig, but it didn't make me unload my spinners. I say use both Quote

Any insight into YGK Xbraid Ultra max wx8? https://xbraidygk.jp/products/ultra2max/ I see some for around $23 for 300m and thinking of getting a couple in #1 and #1.5. I've been using a mid priced varivas 8 and have been happy but can't source it for close to the same cost. scott Quote

It looks like it's their entry level line. Price seems good though. Also, I haven't found a line from them I haven't liked. 2 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 18, 2024 Super User Posted December 18, 2024 I'll chime in - especially on spinning tackle, probably can't go wrong with any YGK braid. The rule on coated braids, softer coatings cast greater distance on spinning tackle. Direct comparison of Varivas with YGK Bornrush, the YGK cast farther. Finer fibers, tighter weave and harder coatings, which are found in spendier grades, have the advantage preventing line dig on baitcasters - they also have abrasion advantages. In YGK, the hardest coating is on WPX1 - Varivas hardest coating is Si-X. (they're all made by Izanas to different specs) 2 Quote
Dan N Posted December 18, 2024 Posted December 18, 2024 I use 15 lb braid on most my spinning outfits, it’s so thin, I don’t feel a need to go lighter. I have 10lb braid on 1 rod, wow, it’s like thread. Lightest I would go myself. I use mostly 8 lb mono for leader. Quote

They don't look any different than any other line but they cast easily, hold up like iron, and both are super sensitive. I have been wanting to try Avani Sea Bass PE Si-X but just haven't had the need yet. Maybe next year. 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted December 18, 2024 Super User Posted December 18, 2024 @FishTank Si-X is almost as spendy as Shinji. But there's an Academy-like discounter in Japan, Naturum, where I can order through my broker, noppin.com, and 150m Si-X is $30. I've bought rods there, they have my favorite Tailwalk reel cover, and I can throw in profile-glow colors of Tackle House RB for night fishing (coming up next month). Broker fee weighs out when I put a cache together at noppin and ship together. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted December 18, 2024 Super User Posted December 18, 2024 @bulldog1935 They have some of the Seabass Si-x at JLS for $32. I almost got some on my last order but really didn't need it just yet. All of my YGK line is pretty much like new. With using leader, it might last forever. 1 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted December 18, 2024 Super User Posted December 18, 2024 I run 10lb braid on all my bass spinning reels to 6 - 10lb FC. Fishing anything heavier, I'll be using BCer's. 1 Quote
