Super User Swamp Girl Posted December 6, 2024 Author Super User Posted December 6, 2024 @LrgmouthShad: Now I'm thinking that if I start a "Post your Big Bass" thread, the BR gang will wax about the nuances of fat bass versus long bass. 😁 2 Quote
softwateronly Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 I'd like a bass with 25" as one of the measurements, I'm not that picky. scott Quote

Some bass are simply built long & skinny while others are short & fat. A typical marsh bass down here a generally short & fat. Both of these bass weighed 11 lbs 3 oz., mine was post spawn from a marsh, the other is from Oklahoma. Now that is a very healthy post spawn bass. I'd expect those fish to be 120-130% relative weight. The "skinny" bass in @Swamp Girl's original post looks like it's head is large enough to swallow the rest of its body- a tell tale sign of being under relative weight. 1 Quote
Macropterus Posted December 6, 2024 Posted December 6, 2024 Even if they’re post spawn, still feel bad for them. I wouldn’t say my wife was thriving after the birth of either of our kids. Quote

And thanks @Swamp Girl for this thread and being allowing us see some great flicks of America’s favorite game fish that’s popular internationally. However, I gotta say in response to your original question we as a group are looking and hoping to catch the biggest bass at hookset, the fattest or longest it doesn’t matter. Now in my opinion if you were to ask a tournament minded angler, the kayak crowd wants a longer bass, spotted comes to mind vs the boaters in which large and smallmouth make heavier bags at weight in. 2 Quote

Good stewards we must be. 1 Quote

Hopefully they have good in-laws. 2 Quote

What I didn't share is that the skinny bass in my original post was terribly hungry, so hungry that she saw her wagging tail and went for it, curling herself into a circle to eat it. Well, she kept eating herself all the way up her body to her head. Then she swallowed her head too and poof, she disappeared! And this is why I don't like to catch skinny bass. 1 Quote
papajoe222 Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Only a woman would ask a question concerning length or girth. Quote
Pat Brown Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 I mean long and fat is obviously what we all want but between the two? I am fine with either - I understand there are a variety of circumstances that lead to a huge range of fluctuation in size through out a year for a bass and unless I see some sign of serious problems - I'm happy! I like healthy looking bass (broad shouldered/thick tailed/smaller mouth/longer/taller). I'm less concerned with whether they are pre or post spawn 😉😉😉 2 Quote
Smokinal Posted December 7, 2024 Posted December 7, 2024 Long and thin may be in but short and fat is where it's at 😉 3 Quote
Super User Koz Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 Length matters. Said the tournament kayak angler. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 I understand validating bass caught by kayak tournament anglers use length on a calibrated board being the rule. Length without girth eliminates to true weight of bass being caught. The length board could add a width measurement to be more an accurate system. Use the same board to measure the bass width. Eg; 21” long bass + 7” = 28 and a 21” + 7.75”=28.75” 28.75 bigger bass. Tom 4 Quote
MichaelN Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I don't really care... as long as it's a big bass. 3 Quote

GRiver Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 I really just want a double digit bass. But I really like catching all the other ones too. 3 Quote
PaulVE64 Posted December 8, 2024 Posted December 8, 2024 My favorite bass are river smallies, they tend to be mean and lean 4 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 8, 2024 Global Moderator Posted December 8, 2024 If I’m in a kayak tournament, give me all them long, skinny fish. If I’m fun fishing, I’d rather catch the fat ones. 2 Quote

Super User LrgmouthShad Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 One I caught yesterday looked to be hungry. Also looked like she'd been caught recently. There was a big tear at the corner of her mouth. 9 Quote
Super User Catt Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 How about long & fat 6 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted December 8, 2024 Author Super User Posted December 8, 2024 @Catt: I caught that bass. Unfortunately, my cap fell off my head just as she jumped, freeing my snakes. Pity. She was my PB. Sincerely, @LrgmouthShad: Your fish is deep, not a bit thin. 1 1 Quote
Super User bowhunter63 Posted December 8, 2024 Super User Posted December 8, 2024 Short and fat. I’m a little partial to that size. 1 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted December 10, 2024 Author Super User Posted December 10, 2024 @king fisher: I'm pretty sure that you caught ^the Kraken.^ I sadly inform you that there's nothing longer and fatter than the Kraken. 1 Quote
