@LrgmouthShad: Now I'm thinking that if I start a "Post your Big Bass" thread, the BR gang will wax about the nuances of fat bass versus long bass. 😁

I'd like a bass with 25" as one of the measurements, I'm not that picky.  :)

@JHoss Yes sir but it will not have the egg swollen belly. Some bass are simply built long & skinny while others are short & fat.

A typical marsh bass down here a generally short & fat.

Both of these bass weighed 11 lbs 3 oz., mine was post spawn from a marsh, the other is from Oklahoma.

Now that is a very healthy post spawn bass. I'd expect those fish to be 120-130% relative weight. The "skinny" bass in @Swamp Girl's original post looks like it's head is large enough to swallow the rest of its body- a tell tale sign of being under relative weight.

Even if they’re post spawn, still feel bad for them. I wouldn’t say my wife was thriving after the birth of either of our kids.

Nice muffin’ top @Lottabass!

And thanks @Swamp Girl for this thread and being allowing us see some great flicks of America’s favorite game fish that’s popular internationally. However, I gotta say in response to your original question we as a group are looking and hoping to catch the biggest bass at hookset, the fattest or longest it doesn’t matter. Now in my opinion if you were to ask a tournament minded angler, the kayak crowd wants a longer bass, spotted comes to mind vs the boaters in which large and smallmouth make heavier bags at weight in.

It’s a fish.. I’d hardly compare that to a human being. We have dominion over the animals and fishes. Good stewards we must be.

Still man, I bet they never sleep with that many offspring all at once. Hormones going crazy AND everything is trying to eat your kids?? Hopefully they have good in-laws.

What I didn't share is that the skinny bass in my original post was terribly hungry, so hungry that she saw her wagging tail and went for it, curling herself into a circle to eat it. Well, she kept eating herself all the way up her body to her head. Then she swallowed her head too and poof, she disappeared!

And this is why I don't like to catch skinny bass.

Only a woman would ask a question concerning length or girth. :bad-idea-014:

I mean long and fat is obviously what we all want but between the two?  I am fine with either - I understand there are a variety of circumstances that lead to a huge range of fluctuation in size through out a year for a bass and unless I see some sign of serious problems - I'm happy!

I like healthy looking bass (broad shouldered/thick tailed/smaller mouth/longer/taller).  I'm less concerned with whether they are pre or post spawn 😉😉😉

Long and thin may be in but short and fat is where it's at    😉

Length matters.

Said the tournament kayak angler.

I understand validating bass caught by kayak tournament anglers use length on a calibrated board being the rule. Length without girth eliminates to true weight of bass being caught.
The length board could add a width measurement to be more an accurate system.
Use the same board to measure the bass width. Eg; 21” long bass + 7” = 28 and a 21” + 7.75”=28.75” 28.75 bigger bass.

I don't really care... as long as it's a big bass.

I really just want a double digit bass.

But I really like catching all the other ones too.

My favorite bass are river smallies, they tend to be mean and lean

If I’m in a kayak tournament, give me all them long, skinny fish. If I’m fun fishing, I’d rather catch the fat ones.

If lying were against the law, I'd have to arrest you, Officer Clayton, for I've seen your bass and NONE of them are skinny fish.

One I caught yesterday looked to be hungry. Also looked like she'd been caught recently. There was a big tear at the corner of her mouth.

@Catt: I caught that bass. Unfortunately, my cap fell off my head just as she jumped, freeing my snakes. Pity. She was my PB.

Sincerely,

@LrgmouthShad: Your fish is deep, not a bit thin.

Short and fat. I’m a little partial to that size.

@king fisher: I'm pretty sure that you caught ^the Kraken.^ I sadly inform you that there's nothing longer and fatter than the Kraken.

  • Thanks 1
