You sound fairly irritated with option 1.   Definitely a vote for Dad. And in  the near future,  Can't you try to replace option 1 ? He just seems to honk you off.

@JHoss Hey, keep us posted on how the tournament season goes fishing with your Dad. I don’t think you’ll regret your decision & will have fun. And to be honest, I’m pretty jealous of this opportunity you’re getting to fish with your old man! 😁

I'll come back and update this thread next year once the season gets under way.

Which one of them has Livescope?

Option 1 has Active Target on his boat. Not sure it matters much as we'll be fishing off my boat that does have Livescope. My dad has "used" mine a couple times on crappie and just gets a kick out of watching me use it. I think Option 1 got jealous a few times that I had it on the front and he didn't have it in the back.

I plan to keep him as a fishing buddy, but suspect our tournament days are largely over. I could see us fishing the occasional event together, but doubt he'll ever be a regular tournament partner again.

I seem to remember your posting here last year about #1 (could have been another poster).  If so, then I'd never fish with that guy again.

I'd pick dad.  Not for sentimental reasons.  Not just becuase mine knows what he's doing and has won tournaments before I was born.  In your case, since he isn't an experienced bass guy, you give him a wacky rigged senko and he gets to play cleanup all day.  You fish what you think they are eating.  He can throw a senko and just catch them.  Only need one rod and a backup.  Keep it simple.

My initial response is to strongly agree with the sentimental posts above.

But sentimentality aside, what are the cons of 2 vs fishing solo?

(This from someone who fishes solo by choice 90% of the time)

Fish with your dad.  You'll always be able to get another fishing partner, but not another dad.

I wouldn't pick one because he's noisy and he has a history of not contributing bass to the livewell. Noise alone would nix him as a partner. Bass hear a lot more than most anglers realize.

Okay, he's goofy. I don't have any electronics and you could have five units and I wouldn't be jealous.

Late to the party but #2 for sure. 2 lines always better than 1, you can set him up in a different part of the column or technique than you to get on a bit faster.

Its much less mentally draining for me to talk to someone for 5 minutes to teach him something than to regulate another adults emotions during any type of competition. Personally, not something I'd want or need in any competition. Also, from the few posts about #1 I feel like its a attitude that will only get worse unless he hits a come to Jesus moment in his life.

Another vote for Dad. Having my dad as a tournament partner sounds like a dream come true, even if he never touched a fishing rod in his life. I know you say your number one priority is winning, but years down the road which memories would be better? For me it’s an easy choice.

This is easy for me I would choose my dad and not even care if we zeroed every derby. Those memories are worth more then money to me. I didn’t have a father figure growing up to teach me anything. right now my tournament partner is my 14 year old son and as much as he wants to win it’s all about memories for me. We did place 3rd once last year and hopefully we will get a win this coming season.

Another vote for dad.  I've fished several with mine and they were some of the most fun experiences I've had.  He's not a bass guy, he's fished Walleye more than anything else, but it was more about the time we got to spend together doing that.  We fished some fairly big tournaments and really never competed for the win, but we always had a ton of fun.
