Alex from GA Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 My buddy called me @ noon and asked if I'd like to go fishing this afternoon and I said yes, I'll meet you @ the ramp in 1/2 hour. Most of my rods were in my boat, in the dock, so I grabbed a couple of rods with mono I had in the house. We worm fished most of the afternoon and I felt at a disadvantage with the mono worm rod. From now on I'll only use braid with a leader. I've been using braid with a leader for about the past year for worming and can feel the bite much better. We both caught several Alabama bass and he caught the biggest. It was the first time in a while I've been in a 60 mph boat, mine goes 25. 6 Quote
softwateronly Posted November 28, 2024 Posted November 28, 2024 @Alex from GA I'm in the same camp. I've gotten used to the way braid to leader fishes and don't feel comfortable moving away from it anymore. scott 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted November 28, 2024 Super User Posted November 28, 2024 You're beginning to understannd why all my reels, from stream to surf, are technically BFS. The only reason to fish more than 30-lb braid is because you need the diameter to fill your deep spool. Beat the rush and fish a shallow tuning spool. 2 Quote
GRiver Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 I’m the opposite, I like mono over braid, just my personal preference. I know braid is smaller, stronger and last longer. I like the smoothness of mono and it’s quiet. @Alex from GA my boat does 25 mph, totally empty, low on fuel, with a good tail wind, plus my hat on backwards so I don’t get drag from the wind. 3 1 Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted November 29, 2024 Super User Posted November 29, 2024 You left out that you like line memory. Since your braid makes noise, you've never tried good braid. My fastest boat does 5 kts. 3 Quote
r83srock Posted November 29, 2024 Posted November 29, 2024 I love braid. Still use mono too. I’ll take braid for most things if I can. My boat does 62 on a good day, sometimes I let my inner 18 yr old out. My favorite river is 5 miles from a dam on the lower end to a rapids on the other. I choose to idle any of it to keep the peace with people who live there. There’s a stigma with people in shiny bass boats. I try to be the guy to break that stigma. Kayak fishing is fun too. 2 Quote
Super User WRB Posted November 29, 2024 Super User Posted November 29, 2024 30 lb Dacron braid is light weight and inexpensive backing line. Tom 1 Quote

When I visited Florida, I fished straight 40# braid for worms in lily pads. Fished from my B-I-L's 14' Gheenoe then. Have since retired and moved to Florida. Fish strictly from shore now. Will have to re-spool several reels with braid. Never cared for a leader, but probably will start using one for ease of breaking off snagged lures now that I'm a foot soldier. 2 Quote

Don’t forget having to keep line conditioner on them all the time, trying to combat line memory. Oh and still changing line every year too, I like that also Haha i have two rigs I use braid on, pitching and dock rig. I have Berkeley X9 on them, it’s the quietest I’ve used so far. 3 Quote
Hulkster Posted December 2, 2024 Posted December 2, 2024 honestly If you use a good quality mono like Sufix Siege or Elite you don't have to worry about line conditioner etc. Even on spinning gear. Sufix Mono casts very smooth on both spinning and baitcasting gear. 1 Quote
