Been a truly WILD couple of days up here, especially last night.  UNPRECEDENTED ICE STORM took down thousands of trees, power poles & lines.  North half of this state is without power and is expected to be for several days.  We lost too many trees to count, at least for now as this is still an on going event.  Fortunately and so far our home, garage and kennels have been spared any major structural damage.

The local power company put out the following statement this morning.

This is some scary stuff.

"Due to a major ice storm, more than 43,900 Great Lakes Energy (GLE) members in nine counties are without power today. The number of members without power rose significantly overnight after reports of falling trees and extensive damage to power lines due to the heavy ice.  Since the storm began late yesterday, more than 30,000 members have already had their power restored with many losing power again after restoration took place.

GLE expects that restoration efforts will take multiple days. Damage to the cooperative’s electric infrastructure is extensive with many broken poles and downed wires. Heavy ice has brought down trees both into powerlines and in roadways making them impassable in some locations. GLE line crews are working in conjunction with contractors and neighboring cooperative utility assistance to restore power safely. Tree trimming crews have also been called in to aid in the effort. 

Generator safety is important during long storms by ensuring that the generator is connected legally using a transfer switch that doesn’t backfeed into powerlines and harm workers. Stay at least 25 feet away from any downed powerline, tree, or other equipment as they could be energized. 

If power is not restored by 10 p.m. tonight and is required, members should seek alternate arrangements."

We are set for the long haul as long as the secondary food freezer in the garage stays cold.  Usually good this time of year for 4 or 5 days.  Plenty of food, water and wood for heat on hand. 

The clean up will take several days and involve the Sthil chain saw.

I got over 2 inches of rain last night. Today it’s a mix of rain, sleet, and snow. Nothing accumulating yet.

 

At this point I just assume it all be rain.

 

One of my local favorite bass lakes is wide open now. Confirmed this morning after the big rain.

Nothing but rain here thankfully. I just got home was dropping 6poundbass off at a friends house and I saw a ton out of town lineman moving about town and camping out at a hotel. They’re either making their way up towards you or are hanging out here locally because we’re supposed to get some severe weather in a few hours.

 

I went by the Consumers Energy yard here in town and the parking lot was full and most of the bucket trucks were gone, I presume they’re up in your neck of the woods. Those boys make a nice mint especially on storm duty but they earn every bit of it working 16 hr shifts.

Might be next week before we see power. Cell towers are all out.  Only connection is in my truck.  Property is literally like a war zone. Trees down every where including my roof.

I saw the radar for your area and saw that snow which isn’t good at all with all the weight that on those trees and lines. It doesn’t help west Michigan got hit fairly hard and it’s not centered around one specific area, it’s clusters all over. Hopefully they can get it taken care of soon and get up your way.

Make a fire and boil some ? I use a little camping pump  filter but all my friends have the gravity ones now

I've had to do this - get a bucket of snow, melt it, filter through a t-shirt, then boil...3 minutes of a rolling boil and you're fine.

When I was on an island in Lake Superior they recommended treating it with drops/tablets in addition to the filter, something about a bacteria. We don’t have to do that at home but wasn’t sure if we had enough fuel to boil water for a week so we treated it all. Drops work way faster than tablets

Not sure what to call this weather but, round two is coming up Wednesday. Wednesday morning freezing rain then temps are going to climb to a high of 65 by the afternoon and an enhanced risk of severe storms by Wednesday evening. @A-Jay, looks like you could get some too, that’ll be round 3 or 4 for you?

@A-Jay I see the National Guard has been called up to assist in your area and they also said that 90% of Otsego county is still without power. Some of the videos coming out of that area is pretty wild too!
 

You guys stay safe up there and hopefully you can catch a break sooner than later.

Our only connection to the outside world is through the satellite wifi hot spot in my GMC !  The sleet and snow today are surly hindering the repair efforts.  A reassessment of the property yesterday revealed it's far worse than I initially anticipated.  It will take me most of the summer to clean up.  Just in time for the next winter event.  Wish I could catch a bass right about now.

Maine got off easy other than the winter refusing to leave. Today was cloudless, but even with all that sunshine, we topped off at 40 degrees and are getting another four inches of snow today followed by sleet followed by rain. Like you, Andy, I just want to go fishing. I'm thinking a good thought for you, buddy.

Couple inches of snow overnight but compared to Northern Michigan and all the tornadoes in TN and Indiana I'll just chalk it up as a very minor inconvenience. Not to mention it'll be 70* Sunday and I should be able to take out the kayak.

Heck, yeah, everything is relative. We had more snow last night and will have more tonight, but the clock is ticking on winter. Spring is coming ever-so-slowly, but it's coming. I can see it in my crocuses and hear it in the goldfinch song. And soon, within a couple weeks, I'll feel it when a bass hits.
