we're getting all of that as wind and rain today.  15-20 MPH constant with gusts over 35.  Supposed to get an inch plus of rain today in the next 8 hours.  The ponds are half thawed and this should break up the ice pretty well (its 57 degrees).  Then sunny wind for the next week plus and 65 degree highs coming up.  I fished today for the first time since Sep/Oct of last year and it was the first day in the woods or water in nearly 8 weeks now.  The cabin fever was real.

We got dumped on - between 4" and 12" depending on where in the Metro you lived...and it's the heavy, wet, heart-attack inducing stuff.

50s and rainy yesterday melted most of the snow. Rivers are flowing. Lakes are getting some puddles atop the ice. We’re trending in the right direction. I’m cautiously optimistic that I’ll be fishing before April.

It's actually pretty typical March/April weather here in OH also.

Not in coastal Maine. Our weather is pretty much the same, day after day after day. Living on the Atlantic really moderates.

I've lived in Ohio, where Tim lives, and in the middle of the U.S.,  where the temperature swings are much more extreme. I've also lived on the West Coast, which is much like the East Coast, where yesterday and today and tomorrow are all pretty much the same day, weather-wise.

Of course, Maritime climates do have fronts, but we can go weeks without much change, temperature-wise.

We also live on the coast. The biggest benefit we get is less snow compared to downtown, unless the winds come in off the water.

I usually come on here and boast about being able to fish year round due to having access to a nuclear hot water discharge cooling private lake (3,000 acres in 3 pools).  Our average temps “normally” allow us to bundle up and go fish.  This winter has been brutally cold and windy.  We went to Florida the first week of February and have not been out since.  I’m normally up for cold weather but this year I finally had to tell my fishing partner I’m not going to torture myself to fish.  We are heading out tomorrow for the first time.  Weather is supposed to be in the mid 50’s and 9mph winds.  That’s pretty pleasant for winter.

After a loooong cold and windy winter I'm going out for the 1st time in 2025.

70's most of next week so will pick out the least windiest day.

Certainly don't expect optimal water temps but just trolling around the lake casting and the anticipation of the 1st bite should restore sanity 😉

That's a club I've definitely never been a part of, and I have the scars and x-rays to prove it. 😂

50s and 60s is forecasted for most of this week. Some sun, some rain, and some wind. This has been the nicest March I can remember in a long time. At this point I’d be surprised if the lakes didn’t thaw before April.

Mid 60's yesterday...got the boat on the water for the 2025 maiden voyage. Everything worked on the Lund...great to be back on the water.

Water temps were in the 39-43 range. No bites.

Wife joined me later in the afternoon...she brought snacks! : )

It was a good day!

The high on Friday is near 70, with a good chance of t storms.

Then a rapid change on Sat, and the high on Sunday is around 30.  There is going to be a seismic shift from Friday to Sunday...

It's going to be in the 70's here all week.  A front is coming through on Friday, but the temps won't drop below freezing.  This time of year is usually when the wind starts blowing like a wind tunnel.  I think winter is done here, but I'm keeping the scraper in the car just in case.

I brought all my gear from the basement to the garage today, where it’ll stay for the next 8 months. It’s almost 70°. Lakes are still frozen solid, though the 2-week forecast is 100% above freezing during the day with only a couple nights dipping below. I can taste it. Snowblower is staying gassed up though.

I took mine out of my truck today, thought about it for 2 seconds, and put it back in.

Mine lives in my truck - even in the dead of August you can find it in there.

Over the past two weeks, I've driven to two ponds and one bog to see if the ice has melted. I did it again this morning. Here's video of me on the pond:

Winter is done here. I haven’t checked the bigger lakes but all of the small ones and the rivers are thawed. The bigger lake around with a temp probe says 41 degrees and warming so that’s thawed out (it just needs another 18’ of depth). We are 60 and rainy now and 65 and sunny this week. Boat pickup is next weekend so I should be on the water Sunday…
