Super User A-Jay Posted February 14 Super User Posted February 14 NWS Gaylord reports a powerful snow squall dropped 3.6 inches of snow in an hour this evening (2/13). 3-inch per hour rate! If you've never seen snow like that - It's pretty Intense. I always say it seems like it should make some kind on noise. But it does not. A-Jay 1 Quote

I’ve seen that rate but not for a full hour. The big snow a couple weeks ago dropped an inch in about 15-20 minutes when the front first hit but then it let up as it passed though. It takes a special combination of wet air and just the right temp for that. 1 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted February 15 Super User Posted February 15 This weekend was supposed to bring the biggest storm of the year with over a foot of snow, but it’s been downgraded now to a projected 3-5 inches overnight, then freezing rain and ice all day tomorrow. I’ll take that over the 12”+ originally projected. Quote

Super User Jar11591 Posted February 16 Super User Posted February 16 What was supposed to be 12”+ of snow turned out to be about 3” of ice. Temps ticked up to right below freezing which meant all the precipitation came in the form of sleet/freezing rain. The snowblower was having a hard time with the ice so rather than break several sheer pins I attacked with a pick and a shovel. Rest of the day is supposed to be all rain, so hopefully that helps clean the rest of it up. What a mess. Quote
Super User DogBone_384 Posted February 16 Super User Posted February 16 This upcoming week is supposed to be in the 20s during the day. The last week in February's forecast call for seasonable temps in the 30's. With some luck from Mother Nature, Cape Cod should have open water by mid March. I hope so, I'm JONSING to get back on the water. Until then, ice fishing is it. Best of luck to all of you in the real deep freeze. 1 Quote

Super User F14A-B Posted February 16 Super User Posted February 16 Received 5” of rain yesterday thru about 4:30A , thunder for 3 hours @ approximately 1 minute intervals, with the thunder came the most unusual orange colored lightning. Ponds, creeks, rivers flooded roads here.. then, at 7A I get up and there is 2” of snow and ice coming down. Wind @ 35 gusting. My Male German Shepherd weighs 128, he’s a big boned boy but he absolutely hates thunder and his bark is incredibly loud. So yea, 3 hours of that. He acts like a war dog lol Totally strange weather event. BTW, still snowing like crazy. It’s supposed to make 45 today. Quote

Those snow events are the worst. A combination of rain, sleet, or what I call "concrete style snow" that the snow blower can't handle. Ours usually come in March when it's warmer out. Even my 2-stage snowblower can't move it. It comes out of the chute like ketchup. Shoveling it sucks too because it weighs a ton. Not much can be done. @A-Jay snowblower could handle it with duallies and tracks. Not mine though. 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted February 16 Super User Posted February 16 We continue to hammered with snow day after day. I've been waiting every 3 days or so before I blow it away. Dumped pretty good last night on top of a good one yesterday, Should have cleaned it today, but I wanted to eek one more day out of it. Well needed to make a trip to the store and barely made it in & out of the drive way. Had to go 4 wheel low and almost framed the AT4. Tomorrow I'll get it done. No choice. Still more snow on the way this week. It's been a time for sure. A-Jay Quote

One of the neighbors has a plow attachment for his lawn tractor.....pushes that stuff right off the driveway. Forget using an ATV....they ain't got the power. Quote

Forget using an ATV....they ain't got the power. My old man had the exact opposite problem. Initially, he tried using an attachment on his riding lawn mower but as winter wore on, it did not have the power. Even with chains on the tires. The wheels would just slowly spin. He switched to using a heavy duty blade on his ATV powered through the wench and it greatly helped. Most ATVs have way more power than a lawn tractor. Unless of course we're talking about full size agriculture sized tractor. The forecast here in about a week looks significantly warmer. Signs of spring... 2 Quote
Super User whitwolf Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 They are calling for 1-5 inches of snow Wednesday. I detest Winter but if is has to snow in the South, (I would rather it not) let's get 8" and just stay home. I'm retired so I won't have to leave the house. My wife loves this crap. On a lighter note, this guy sums it up. 😀 https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18i4jq5KW4/ 1 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 After a few mild winters in a row and such a brutally hot summer last year I was anticipating another mild winter. Could not have been more wrong. The only thing that has stopped the snow is when the temps plunge down into single digits and negatives. Currently everything is coated in ice while 40mph winds make the 15° feel like -10°. Lakes and rivers have been frozen solid for over 2 months, 2 week forecast has zero days that even crack 32°, and more snow and ice on the way this week. At this rate, I may not be fishing until May. 3 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 We got a bunch of rain over the last couple days. Temps plummeted from near 50 into the teens yesterday and it turned to ice then snow. Single digit lows and highs in the teens/low 20's the rest of the week. BOOOOO!!! On a positive note, I bought a 12" speaker baffle for my tweed Vibroluxe, and I've been swapping some speakers through it. After trying a few different American voiced speakers, I gave a Celestion Vintage 30 a go just for giggles. I was expecting it to be too mid forward in this circuit, but to my surprise it sounds glorious both clean and dirty. It's staying in there. I can't stop playing. Poor neighbors, I bet they're looking forward to when I can go fishing even more than I am. 😂 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 On the coast of Maine, the wind is howling, which is pretty common for spring. When I was snowblowing this morning, at one point, I leaned into the wind lest it topple me. The wind would gust and blow the snow I was blowing back at me. It had ice in it and it hurt! We added about another ten inches yesterday to the snow already there. Here's a photo of a tree form Juniper in my front yard wearing a cap of snow. One more snowfall and the Juniper will disappear! However, the clock is ticking for our snow. We'll be reaching highs in the low to mid-thirties in a few days and with everyday delivering more sunshine, the snow will fade...until March, which brings big snowfalls, but they don't last long. We had a 31" snowfall about six years ago, which was the biggest single snowfall of my life, but nothing compared to the snow that can fall on the south shore of Lake Ontario. FWIW, I'm turning off my Christmas lights in two days. I keep them on for much longer than most to help light our long nights, but the nights have already shortened considerably. 23 hours ago, gim said: A combination of rain, sleet, or what I call "concrete style snow" that the snow blower can't handle. Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 If you think we're snowy just now, compare today's snowfall to the winter a decade ago. The first photo is my car: I can't find my photos of our 31" snowfall, but the worst winter was the winter when it didn't stop snowing. Everyday, it snowed one to three inches. I climbed the extension ladder everyday to fight the ice dams, but they won and we had water coming through ceilings in five places. I also hired guys to climb the roof and shovel, but we just couldn't keep up with it. Repairing ceilings that spring was expensive! Quote
