Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted January 28 Global Moderator Posted January 28 The sun was out today and temps got to 32*. That’s an almost 50* swing from just a few days ago. It’s Michigan and it’s winter so there’s always a catch! The wind was blowing over 20mph. To top that off, just as I was getting home around 6, we had a snow squall pop up along with stronger winds. We got about 3” of snow in 1.5 hrs. Oh what fun. 1 Quote
Super User gim Posted January 28 Super User Posted January 28 Balmy here this week. January thaw. 42 degrees this afternoon, and near 50 on Thursday. What little snow we have will be gone by the end of the week. Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 28 Super User Posted January 28 According to the local NWS, it has snowed at least a trace every single day this January here, and going back to 2024, 63 out of the last 69 days. Meaning I'm on the clean the snow one day, get more snow later that same day and overnight, clean the snow one day, get more snow later that same day and over night, clean the snow one day, get more snow later that same day and over night, clean the snow one day, get more snow later that same day and over night, Program. Move to the snow belt they said. It will be fun they said . . . . There had better be several giant smallies in my future. And I do mean several ! A-Jay 2 3 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted January 29 Super User Posted January 29 Take a look at how much snow has fallen across the U.S. so far this winter. Southern cities like New Orleans and Pensacola have had more snow than places like Salt Lake City and Omaha. Of course this winter we have been buried several times. I say again, Several. Super User Jar11591 Posted January 29 Super User Posted January 29 We’re at 20” total this year with 22 days that received some type of winter precipitation. Not bad for my neck of the woods. It’s been frigid cold, but we could easily receive a single storm that dumps 20”, so that amount spread across 2 months so far isn’t bad at all. Quote

A-Jay The lake effect isn't surprising. Having that much arctic cold air when the lake was still plenty warm is literally the definition of lake effect snow. The mid plains though is surprising with how little there is. We've had as much here in north NJ as north and south dakota for the most part. On the flip side, look at the snowpack in the high rockies and cascades. As much as 30' in places. That should bode well for spring melt and lessening the current drought conditions. Quote
Super User gim Posted January 30 Super User Posted January 30 We’re now a whopping 20 inches behind the historical average snowfall here in the Twin Cities. Traditionally, our big snow makers originate as plumes of moisture from the gulf down south that collide with cold air from Canada. That hasn’t occurred yet. The northwest flow that @casts_by_fly speaks of above prevents significant snow here because it’s just small clipper systems lacking energy and moisture. Once they hit the Great Lakes to the east of me, then they create constant snow. The exact pattern that has buried @A-Jay all month. The northwest flow has resulted in a lot of cold air here this winter thus far; just very little snow. 1 Quote

Ya, we've had the cold snaps here - last week we had a 2-day stretch where the temp never got above zero even for the high. Tomorrow they're predicting it to bump up against +50....weird weather this winter. We need the snow - it's the snowmelt that keeps our ground wet and the rivers running...at the current pace, we're gonna have another drought season with low-water levels everywhere. Quote

Generally, yes. However, snow melt may or may not alleviate drought much depending on how quickly it melts and how quickly it warms up. If the ground is still froze, and we get a rapid thaw, the snow melt doesn't seep into the ground or reduce drought. And even then, it takes A LOT of snow to make a dent because the water ratio with snow varies. Last winter we had this very same issue and then in late March, the pattern shifted. We got a lot of regular, consistent rain through most of the entire spring and into summer. So there is still hope even if we don't really get much snow. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 30 Global Moderator Posted January 30 we’ve had a couple 50+ and one 60+ degree day here lately, quite nice We need less of any moisture all the time. We are in a “drought” while some areas are still rebuilding from devastating floods. We all hope that never happens again but unfortunately it will, I wish we could take our constant floods and pipe it to somewhere out west Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted February 1 Super User Posted February 1 We’re a winter wonderland once again. Got 6” over night, more coming tomorrow evening. Up to 25 total snow events for about 28”. So far we’ve managed to avoid a monster storm. But March is usually good for a doozy or two as a final middle finger as winter ends. 2 Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted February 1 BassResource.com Administrator Posted February 1 We just got the first snow of the season today. Maybe about an inch. We're supposed to get 5 more tonight. 1 Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted February 4 Super User Posted February 4 We got hammered again. There was already 8 inches or so on the ground from the other day so it's hard to say what we got this time. One things for sure, it's a true to life Winter Wonderland up in here. I'll be blowing snow again tomorrow. Might try to get a few pics or perhaps some video. I'm starting to get a little impressed at this point. A-Jay Quote

Super User gim Posted Saturday at 10:55 PM Super User Posted Saturday at 10:55 PM I got about 5 inches of snow early this morning. Light fluffy stuff that the snow blower chewed through easily. At least now the landscape looks more like winter here. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted Saturday at 10:58 PM Super User Posted Saturday at 10:58 PM @gim ours just started. Calling for 6-8” now, so a slight downgrade. Looks like lots more headed this way next week too. In the thick of it now. 1 Quote
