If you use snaps, are the front split rings on the line tie really necessary on jerkbaits like the Vision 110?

I recently ordered a 110 off of Amazon. Apparently some JDM issues didn’t ship with the front O rings. Do I need to add one if I am using a snap or am I affecting the action and need to add a split ring and tie direct?

JDM visions don't come with a nose split ring that's normal, you will also find the center treble is barbless. The use of snaps is a lot more common in Japan so no need to add a split ring if that's the route you're going.

If you are using snaps one thing to think about doing is going the JDM Vision route for all your lures.

Buy a pair of spilt ring pliers and remove front rings on your most used lures. It costs about $10 but the real price is how much time it takes to do this.

I didnt like tying knots every time i wanted to change lures when i first got into bass fishing, i only used snaps. Connecting a snap to a ring created a bigger profile and changed actions on certain baits, so i bought the tool and it made it much better.

I then learned the SDJ knot and went all in on it. Plus i also didnt like how much good quality snaps costs. The cheaper ones bend and snap.

Either use a snap, or tie a loop knot. I find doubling up can affect the action intended for the lure, at least that’s my experience and catch rate.

No. Snap OR Split Ring in my opinion. Having both increases the noise from the bait and a second possible failure point without any benefits aside from saving the time to remove the split ring.

I fish a jerkbait now and then, even some Vision 110's.

For the line tie ~ I do not do clips or ROUND split rings, on anything.

I will forever be an OVAL split ring guy.

You could also try to tie a Rapala knot to your floater diver and eliminate the snap and split ring.
But I can see the convenience of a snap.

I have to agree with A-Jay on the use of the oval split rings. Many of the SK crankbaits come with them. Liked the way they performed and switched over many of my Rapala cranks.

I can totally see the convenience of a snap.

However what I'm not a fan of, is that the few times I have used clips,

it's almost like the clip itself prevents me from re-tying the connection knot.

So I end up fishing that connection knot, cast after cast, fish after fish;

meaning WAY longer than I normally would.

When I HAVE to re-tie to change lures or after a few plus size fish.

I have had clips open up on me but I will admit it's a super rare occurrence.

Happens with the same frequency as having a treble hook split ring stretch out or even fail.

SO I don't consider clip failure as a problem,

but old, worn and or frayed connection knots lose fish,

especially big fish with FC line or leader.

So, I am all about re-tying to that oval split ring whenever I feel the urge.

Yup, I might have a problem.

I've been attaching the snap to the split ring for years with no issues.  A snap won't last forever, and if it seems like it opens too easy I will cut it off and put on a new snap.

LOL ~ Don't tell anyone.

Quik-Mart is my go to.

btw- the pictured baits are 'just for display'

I'm not actually allowed to reveal my entire collection

as it has been deemed 'too dangerous',

by the bait monkey.

I asked Megabass about this last year. I had noticed that some 110’s came with a split ring and some did not.

They responded and said the ones without a split ring were intended for the Japanese market. Ones with a split ring are marketed for the North American base.

I added a split ring to the ones that did not come with one.

Right? He asked my address the other day!! Haha 🤣🤣🤣

Seriously, I know me, but if I’m gonna throw a 25 dollar jerk bait it ain’t gonna have a snap on it..

Hey, that’s just me.

Interesting, what is it exactly about oval split rings that you prefer or that is superior? I noticed LC uses them.

Look at the diagrams on the package.

Prevents knot slide which might damage the connection knot

I've also had knots slip between the coils of cheaper split rings, would eventually work its way completely free if I hadn't noticed during a retie. Oval split rings on all hard baits for years now, never had another issue.

I think the better word is “reduce,” not prevent. The knot can easily still slide and damage a connection knot. Certainly the simple physics and oval shape compared to a circular split ring would reduce the chances of it. But it’s definitely still possible.

I’m skeptical that there is a way to completely prevent it from occurring.

Nope ~

I'm sticking with Prevent and Impossible on this one.

Yep - first thing I do when I get a new jerkbait is put an Owner Oval on the front, either as a new add-on or replacing the round ring.

Crankbaits get the Owner Teardrop....wider wobble with that.

If I am bound & determined to use a snap instead of a split ring, what is the absolute best style/brand I can get for this application?

Personally I'd go with VMC DuoLocks if I was to ever use snaps.

I'd say you can completely prevent it by using a quick clip. The only sharp spots are the ends of the wire and if your knot hits that, your baits already gone.

You're going to get a different answer from everyone. I don't have a brand preference, but I like the quick clip style like these instead of a traditional snap. I just buy whatever brand the local tackle shop has at the time I need to restock. Usually around the 20-30 lb range.
