I enjoy watching some of the Chinese TV series.  :teeth:

I worked in the same machine shop for about 37.5 years before retiring.  The owner eventually bought a machine shop and foundry in China.  Even with the cost of shipping the parts back to the US, the savings was unbelievable.  They even sent a girl to New Jersey so I could show her how I modified the seating tools I used for swinging a .007 or .008 radius into holes as small as .046 diameter.

BTW, her English was probably better than mine.

I just ordered a Daiwa Steez Real Control rod for under $500. Here, they are $1300. Got to love that exchange rate.

It's a dream rod for me so I'm pretty excited. I was actually planning on getting a G. Loomis 822S or 902S as this year's big rod purchase. Maybe next year.

Charging $1300USD for a fishing rod is laughable. A d**n megabass arms super leggera costs less, and those rods are a d**n piece of art, and look better than any custom rod you will ever find.

In Canada the Real Control with taxes would cost over $2000😅I mean I don't understand what the hell is that?☹

I got to hold one (demo) last year and it was amazing but when I was told it was going to be around $1300, I laughed too.  That rod has been on mind since. I looked into getting a Megabass Arms rod from Japan and it was going to cost a pretty penny as it was going to be custom made to a certain extent.  I would agree it is a work of art which also stopped me from ordering it. The Daiwa rod is built a little different and super light but it looks really tough. So both form and function.

I hope it is everything I imagine it to be.  It will be here next week and then that's when the real cabin fever will set in.  A new toy and no place to play.

I can relate.  My Calcutta Conquest SE 30 arrives tomorrow, I got and installed an Avail 17CNQ29R spool for my '17 Conquest BFS, got a new Palms Egeria EFVC-53L+ a month ago, plus 16 new jerkbaits, and the rivers have shelf ice and the bays and canals of Lake Erie and Lake St Clair are froze.  Bummer.

I couldn’t believe the price of those arms super leggera rods.  I know a guy here that is collecting all of them and I think is missing 2 and he actually fishes them.   Good on him but for that price I’d shed a few tears if one broke.

I had two rods from the Megabass Heritage series, the Giallo Tristrado and the Rosso, and sold them both because each time i used them, i was way more worried about breaking them than catching fish. No more expensive rods like that for me, unless they have lifetime warranty. Amazing rod, tho.

I think everyone would be super surprised at how many Chinese made items, regardless of type of product, we use and have in our everyday normal lives. Heck, even a Ford truck is now made in Mexico. That doesn’t stop ford from still selling trucks.

I also know all about counterfeit products. It is a big deal, but much less common than believed (IMHO). I was in manufacturing pretty much my entire career. We had brand standards that had to be followed (like most companies). However, we made products for aerospace and space companies. We would have to be very diligent in the parts procured. Often times, direct from the manuf.

I’m also a woodworker by hobby. Many low and high end table saws (for example) are made in the same factory, though they go through a different finishing line.

Not the best analogy since the newer Fords are being recalled for catching on fire monthly, and since Chevy (GM) went to Mexico for certain vehicle production their recalls are soaring, along with mass reports of failures, poor quality control, and the start of their downfall.

(Dodge somehow avoided moving to Mexico so far and they also lit their brand on fire as well while still being made here so take that with a grain of salt)

Now this isnt a fault of Mexico, its a fault of poor leadership and terrible choices for CEO's. Along with trying to save as much money by cutting every corner possible while upcharging the customer 2x what their vehicles used to cost. Who wouldve ever thought Chevy trucks would cost $65-75k?

The reason i wrote all of this is because these were great companies that had a big part in building America, this was the result of them outsourcing to save money. If Daiwa or Shimano did this too it wouldnt end well for them. Theres alot of people that worship the JDM market and its gear and will only buy from Japan, and im sure the quality would take a hit, and prices would increase.

It would cost money to open up a factory and we would be paying for that up front. And if they moved to China to save money, what other expenses would they want down? And what would they cut to save even more?

Then add this, the Chinese made reels would be sold for MSRP.

No more JDM market for people to use the USD-Yen exchange rate, there goes all our savings. Sure some Chinese sites you can get JDM reels for a cheap price but once they would be mass produced in China there would be counterfeit products all over.

JDM means reels that are sold in Japan, it has nothing to do where they’re manufactured at. A lot of JDM reels like the Tatula 100 for example are still manufactured in Thailand.

Look at the other thread, 90% of the guys only want reels made in Japan. And thats their main reason for buying from the JDM market, the savings are just an added bonus.

And that the reels assembled/made in Japan are much smoother and more refined. Personally wouldnt have thought there would be a difference, but learned that today. Theres talk about how they pass completely over the Thai made Tatulas etc... And only buy the Japanese made reels. I would definitely put money on the higher end gear guys boycotting any reel that goes to China for production.

I didnt mean to claim every reel sold in Japan is made there, but 80% of the time if someone buys from the JDM market its because they want a reel made in Japan. Example: I dont go to Canada to buy American hotdogs to save $3. I go to Canada for maple syrup. Personally i like my reels made in Thailand, but the guys that are very serious about spending money on gear only want premium stuff made right in Japan.
