Super User FishTank Posted February 1, 2007 Super User Posted February 1, 2007 I have been thinking of buying a "burner" reel and wanted to see if anybody had a favorite or any opinions on what to look for. I will be using it to fish spinner baits, buzz baits and frogs. I have not decided which rod to go with yet. I am going to wait until I can put the set together before I decide. Thanks for any info. Super User .ghoti. Posted February 1, 2007 Super User Posted February 1, 2007 My reel with the highest gear ratio is a Quantum Energy PT 7:1. It cranks in 27" of line for every turn of the crank. Aother reel of mine is a Abu C4 with 6.3:1 gears. It cranks in 30" per turn. Which one is the "burner"? I still like the PT better. But, if you're interested in speed, look at inches per turn, not gear ratio's. Cheers, GK Quote

Get a Shimano Stradic 2500, it will burn out "burner" baitcasters in an eyeblink with an IPT of 33". Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted February 2, 2007 Super User Posted February 2, 2007 Raul's comment doesn't help you much if you are focused on a baitcaster, but the Shimano Stradic is "The Bomb!" As an all-around reel, this is one you should own. You could do all of your fishing with this reel matched up as a spinning outfit. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 2, 2007 Super User Posted February 2, 2007 Well RW, he said he was on the look for a burner reel, he just din 't say which type. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted February 2, 2007 Author Super User Posted February 2, 2007 Thanks for the suggestion Raul and RW but I have a Sustain 2500 and believe it or not, it has an IPT of 33". ;D I am really looking for a baitcaster. I have been using the Sustain for this purpose but I have become more comfortable with a baitcaster and besides the Baitmonkey keeps hounding me. I have been considering a Daiwa Zillion, Quantum Tour Edition Pt and (of course) the Shimano Curado but I am intersted in reading opinions on whatever reel that you guys suggest. Quote
Super User Redlinerobert Posted February 2, 2007 Super User Posted February 2, 2007 Daiwa Zillion 7.1. That thing rocks. Quote
Super User Raul Posted February 2, 2007 Super User Posted February 2, 2007 Well so much for the burning burner question. Ok, I know the Zillion has the same size and frame the old TDZ had, I know that it has wet drag system, it really looks KILLER with those red accents over the silver, I know it weights a lot less than the Curado ( about 1.5 ounces less which is a lot of weight ). Quantums ? not even as a gift I want them. Curado burner ......... the only thing that would stop me from getting one is the weight. Tough choice between a Curado and a Zillion. Funny, Zillions were on sale at GinRin......the baitmonkey eyeballed them for a month but never decided to get one, after all, we already have a burning burner Stradic for that purpose. Which one looks better for you ? just for the weight issue i would go for the Zillion ( and the Shimano posse look out cuz I have one foot on one and the other foot on the other, yeah, ) Quote
shimanogloomis man Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 curado is the way to go my friend has one and it kicks @ss or another option is the chronarch 100b a little slower ratio but my personal fav ;D Quote
Super User J._Bricker Posted February 2, 2007 Super User Posted February 2, 2007 FishTank- I would have to agree with the way Raul broke it down. Both the Zillion and the new Curado 7.1's are dynamite reels. The Zillion is also smaller and more compact than the new Curado. But you can get the new Curado on EBay for about $80 less than the Zillion. And if you're wondering..... Thanks to the Bait Monkey I do own them both, more of one reel than the other. Which ever one you choose, you can't go wrong. My .02, JB Quote
scbassin Posted February 2, 2007 Posted February 2, 2007 The Pflueger Summit WLP has a 30" line pick-up & is 7.1:1. BPS sells it for 159.95. GinRin had Shimano Speedmasters 7.1:1 for $146. he is out now just keep an eye on his site Quote
