Tonight, my wife and I will be going with our grandkids to trick or treat. It's always a good time. In the small town we live in, it's still popular with the kids.                                  As a kid in the 1960s, we used a pillow case for our candy sack, and made our costumes. I was a ghost, a pirate and a cowboy. Lots of folks made treats like candy apples, cookies, or cupcakes. We usually just munched these down along the way. My dad never seemed to worry about us trick or treating, and would say ok boys, have fun. The goal was to get as much candy as possible, and I remember the pillow cases being heavy with candy when we were finished.                 If your going out with kids or grandkids tonight for trick or treat, have a good and safe Halloween.                       Do we have any BR members who will be taking the youngsters out for trick or treat tonight?

Some of the memories you described were me too when I was younger.  My brother and I would use pillow cases for our candy and we FILLED them.

My boy is nearly 6 so he'll be going later (either me or my wife takes him, and the other attends to kids visiting our house).  I'll try to post a photo later or tomorrow if I remember.

One of the houses down the street puts up about 40 of those big blow up characters.  It has attracted a lot of visitors the past couple weeks.

Yep - we did the same back in the 60s...sis and I would fill our pillowcases to almost overflowing.

Yep, we take the younger ones every year.
Kinda our thing.
When the old man can’t walk any farther he turns around and sits at the end of the driveway taking care and looking out for other people’s kids.

I got a nasty note for not putting out candy two years ago (we weren’t home). Last year I put a bowl of candy at the end of my driveway next to a lantern and nobody touched it, I ate enough of it to make my stomach hurt and threw the rest away.

After my parents moved they forgot it was halloween and didnt put anything out. Got a nasty note like you and so the next year they just put out an empty bowl with a sign "please take only a few" and never had a problem. 😂

Like you guys above we used to run around with a pillow case and had way more than we should have. Had houses with home made rice crispy treats, candy apples and others. You always remembered the houses that gave out full sized candy bars! At about 10 or so our parents would let us go by ourselves as long as we were in a group with our friends...times have changed and im not even that old.

Taking my 3yr old out and this year my inlaws are walking with us. First year she really understands the process and is excited. They really need to just move Halloween to the closest Friday though, its not like its really a holiday.

Halloween > Christmas

Christmas can just drop off the calendar completely and it wouldn't bother me

For some it is - look up Samhain...that's what Halloween 'replaced'.

Haven't done 'Christmas' since I was way younger....it's Yule for me ( which IS different )

@MN Fisher how bout that. Never even heard of Samhain but doesn't surprise me being in a Catholic school all the way through highschool.

@gimruis I dont like the focus of current Christmas, its gotten way out of hand. Seeing family around that time is what I enjoy. New Years is the biggest over rated day to ever exist though...valentines day can go with it.

That's the part that seemingly never ends.  Society tends to skip right past Thanksgiving nowadays.

Right there with you. Thanksgiving is probably my favorite holiday. Perfect weather, excellent food, just seeing family and appreciating it. It's a shame its taken for granted as much as it is. Part of thanksgiving weekend though was going out to cut down a tree while everyone was out black friday shopping. Thats one tradition I do miss being in the eastern part of NC, "tree farms" down here are trees lined up in parking lots. Gotta go out to the mountains to get a real tree farm and I dont see that as even an option this year.

We used to trick or treat when I was growing up.  Same deal as you guys- pillow case and lightly made costumes.  Different neighborhoods had trick or treat on different nights so we'd often do our own one night and another on another night.

Around here, it's on halloween only.  Our street gets basically zero since we're a dead end well away from anywhere.  But our friend's house is the first in line of a neighborhood which has one way in and one way out with 250 houses or so.  The police shut the street and parents drop kids at one end to pick them up at the other (or they park in town and walk it all).  We go to the friend's house and help dish out candy while enjoying some 'adult beverages'.  We are expecting 600-750 kids to come through this year (last year was similar) and it might even be more since its 75 degrees outside and beautiful.

No kids, so no trick or treating for me, but I still got myself a bunch of candy. Girlfriend is going out with her friends so I get the house to myself. Gonna set a bowl of candy out so the few kids we get can help themselves. And order some chicken wings and I’ll probably watch some basketball or play some games.

I remember making my own costume, getting a pillow case from mom, and then it seemed like it rained every year.

Glen used to upload an AI generated image to celebrate each holiday.   I don’t know why he stopped.  Guess I’ll have to do it myself. Happy Halloween everyone.

You can still get a tree in western NC, they need the business

We used to get a real tree every year growing up.  It was nothing but a pain in the rear.  Costed the same as a fake one, lasted a month, pine needles everywhere, and toss it in the yard to rot afterwards.  My Mother insisted on it but she didn't do any of the work involved, unless you count ornaments as work.

Fake one is fine by me, stick it in a box when your done until next year.
